Late Goal from Hilltoppers Forces 1-1 Draw Against Patriots

The Patriots broke the 0-0 tie in the 85th minute, but the Hilltoppers answered in the final minute of play to earn a 1-1 tie on Saturday night.

TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler men's soccer picked up another point in the Lone Star Conference race on Saturday with a 1-1 draw against St. Edward's.

The Patriots held a 17-10 advantage in total shots, but the Hilltoppers held a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.

The Hilltoppers held the early advantage on offense, putting up a pair of shots in the first 20 minutes, but neither went on net. Neither side would be able to generate quality chances until the 36th minute, when Davis Mays struck the first shot on goal of the game that would be saved by the Hilltoppers keeper.

Just under two minutes later, Jordan Toy found his own quality chance, but again the Hilltoppers keeper had the save to keep the game 0-0.

Just 2:50 into the final half, the Hilltoppers got their first big chance. This time, a shot from the top of the box was well struck, but goalkeeper Luke Ryan made the stop to keep it 0-0.

Ryan would go on to make another key save in the 76th minute, and again in the 83rd minute as he kept his clean sheet intact. That save led to a breakout counter attack for the Patriots, and a streaking Danny DeMarias down the right side opened up the field. He crossed the ball back over to the left corner of the box, where Niko Vasileiou controlled the touch. He would turn on net and drill a left footed shot that skimmed the post as it went into the net.

That big shot gave the Patriots the lead, but in the final moment of the game the Hilltoppers found some offense. A ball was played out for a throw in, and on that throw in the Hilltoppers were able to head it to the back post where they were able to finish the shot and even up the score at 1-1.

Niko Vasileiou recorded his third goal of the year in the contest, while DeMarias added in his second assist of the year.

Next up for UT Tyler will be a matchup against Oklahoma Christian on November 2nd. That game will be the final home contest of the year for the Patriots.
