PORTALES, N.M. – UT Tyler went on the road and dominated from start-to-finish in a 2-0 victory over Eastern New Mexico on Saturday afternoon.
The Patriots secured all six available points towards their Lone Star Conference standing with the victory after out-scoring St. Mary's and Eastern New Mexico by a 5-to-0 margin in the two matches. Junior
Natalie Jones assisted both goals on Saturday, rattling a shot off the post that led to the first goal of the game and then closed out the match and the week by beating Eastern New Mexico down the sideline to set up an eventual goal by graduate student
Samaris Alvarado.
Junior
Brooke Mullins put the first goal away after Jones found the top woodwork, heading home a goal just under 10 minutes into the game. Eastern New Mexico put their first and only shot on target in the fifth minute, but managed very little offensive pressure past that point as the Patriots out-shot the Greyhounds by a 21-to-9 margin.
UT Tyler put nine shots on target and maintained their offensive pressure for all 90 minutes of action, eventually adding the insurance goal in the 83
rd minute after holding the 1-0 lead for the majority of the contest. Jones took a goal kick all the way down the sideline on her own, crossed a ball to the foot of senior
Mackenzee Stokes, who found Alvarado wide open for the finish inside the Greyhound box.
Jones now has four assists on the season and leads UT Tyler with 14 points. Mullins and Alvarado have both netted three goals after their scores on Saturday afternoon.
Barring the results of Saturday's matches across the Lone Star Conference, UT Tyler will be in the mix as one of at least five teams to stand with seven points in league play, making the wins this week all that more important.
Alvarado led UT Tyler with five shots and was one of three Patriots to put multiple shots on target in the game.
Keeper
Emily Clark completed a clean sheet for the week with a save on the shot she faced early in the game.
UT Tyler will travel to Dallas on Wednesday night for a road tilt against perennial power and no. 18 ranked DBU.
