Patriots Fall 2-1 in LSC Quarterfinals to Hilltoppers

UT Tyler put up a strong effort, but a late goal from St. Edward’s gave them the one goal advantage at the end of the contest.

AUSTIN, TEXAS – UT Tyler men's soccer came up just short against St. Edward's in the Lone Star Conference Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon.

The Patriots put together a strong opening stretch in the contest, culminating in a goal from Solomao Saboia in the 26th minute of action. That action was at the end of a run from the Patriots that saw a pair of shots on goal from two different players before Saboia slotted home the game opening goal off of an assist from Omar Belahna.

The Patriots would continue to push the pace and put another shot on goal, but St. Edward's put themselves onto the board with a huge goal in the 44th minute to level the score at 1-1 heading into the halftime break.

Coming out of that halftime break, both teams would combine for just four total shots over the first 21 minutes of the second half as each side battled it out on the defensive side. Goalkeeper Luke Ryan made a pair of saves for the Patriots in those four shots, preserving the 1-1 tie.

The big moment of the contest came in the 71st minute, as a foul from the Patriots inside the box would ultimately send the Hilltoppers to the spot with a chance to take the lead. There they would convert, putting themselves into the lead for the first time in the game.

The Patriots nearly answered with a Keaton Hartman effort just over a minute later, but it was saved by the Hilltoppers goalkeeper. They would muster up one final effort in the closing stages of the half from Saboia, but it would not be enough as the Patriots fell 2-1.

On the game the Patriots were outshot 13-10, but held a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.

The Patriots finish the season with a 4-6-7 record overall and their third appearance in the LSC Tournament in program history.
