Patriots Bullpen Shines in Comeback Win over Lubbock Christian

The Patriots bullpen allowed just one hit and no runs while the offense scored five unanswered runs including a walk off walk to win game one.

TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler baseball pulled off a dramatic game one win, as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth before Ethan Bedgood drew a walk off walk to bring home the winning run and take game one of the four game series against Lubbock Christian.

Dylan Blomquist got the ball to start the contest for the Patriots, but the Chaps got to him for two runs in the first inning behind a trio of walks, an error, and a single up the middle to make it 2-0.

Blomquist battled back in the second inning, picking up a strikeout in the 1-2-3 frame, but a solo blast and another walk combined with two singles in the third made it 4-0 Chaps and his night would be done after three innings.

For the Patriots offense, they could not solve the Chaps pitching early in the contest. They mustered just one hit through three innings and loaded the bases in the fourth inning but could not find a run.

Reliever Bryson Adair took over for Blomquist in the fourth, and he delivered nothing short of a gem of a performance. He struck out a pair in the fourth inning, two more in the fifth, and worked around a leadoff single for his third straight scoreless inning in the sixth while posting another strikeout.

That effort did not go unnoticed at the plate for the Patriots, as a pair of hit by pitches led off the fifth inning before a lineout from Lane Hutchinson moved a runner to third and Kaston Mason drove in the Patriots first run with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Patriots again loaded the bases in the sixth but could not plate a run to cut the deficit any closer than 4-1. That led to Josh Pelfrey taking over in the seventh, and he walked his leadoff batter before inducing the ground ball double play to wipe the bases clear and ensure a scoreless frame.

UT Tyler finally found some runs in the seventh, as two straight singles from Ethan Bedgood and Austin Ochoa were followed by a wild pitch and then an RBI groundout from Kyle Atkinson to quickly make it 4-3. Two batters later, it was Hayden Clearman who drilled a double to deep left center to plate Jordan Ardoin and make it 4-4.

Nick Niebur took the mound in place of Pelfrey for the eighth, and he worked around three walks with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to end the inning with no damage done. After a scoreless eighth ensued for the Patriots in the eighth inning, he worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts to hold off the Chaps for the sixth consecutive inning.

That led to the bottom half of the ninth, and a leadoff walk from Connor Clark combined with a single from Hutchinson and an intentional walk of Mason made it bases loaded with nobody out.

That brought Ethan Bedgood back up to the plate, and he would work the count in his favor before drawing the walk off walk to plate Clark and ensure a Patriots victory.

In the contest, the Patriots bullpen went six full innings and allowed just one hit, no runs, just four walks, and nine total strikeouts to completely shut down Chaps hitters.

Bryson Adair went three innings and allowed just one hit while striking out five.

Nick Niebur got the win after going two innings and striking out four while allowing no hits.

On offense, Ethan Bedgood and Austin Ochoa combined for four hits, three walks, one RBI, and two runs scored on the night.

The Patriots get a chance to make it three straight wins tomorrow afternoon with a first pitch time of 2 p.m. at Irwin Field. That game will be game one of a seven inning doubleheader tomorrow afternoon.
