Last weekend, the Patriots made the long trek down to Kingsville, Texas to take on Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Javelinas took the series opener by a score of 6-2, but the Patriots rattled off three straight wins to close out the series. Those wins were bookmarked by pitching gems from
Garrett Arredondo in game two, and
Rawley Hector in game four as both pitchers put together quality starts.
REGIONALLY RANKED
The Patriots come in this week ranked #5 in the NCBWA South Central Regional poll for the second consecutive week. The program has been ranked in every edition of the NCBWA Regional poll this season. This week's poll is led by West Texas A&M at the top, followed by Angelo State and then Lubbock Christian at number three.
PATRIOTS NOTES AND TRENDS
- UT Tyler finished the 2023 season 39-19 overall and 34-14 in LSC play on the way to finishing 3rd in the LSC and making the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the Division II era.
- The Patriots defended Irwin Field in huge way last season, going 22-5 in games at home. Going back to their first season of Division II eligibility (2022), the Patriots are now 43-20 inside Irwin Field.
- Head Coach Brent Porche enters his eighth season with UT Tyler and holds a record of 231-111 with the Patriots. He holds a career record of 378-194 in his 11 total seasons.
- With Sunday's win over Texas A&M-Kingsville, Coach Porche became the all-time winningest coach in UT Tyler Baseball history, surpassing James Vilade for the top spot.
- The Patriots will return several key contributors from the 2023 season, including All-Americans Garrett Arredondo and Dylan Blomquist, as well as All-Region nods Lane Hutchinson and Austin Ochoa. LSC Freshman of the Year Kaston Mason makes his return, as well as All-LSC nods Ethan Bedgood and Miles Clack.
- For the Patriots offense, they have been led by the duo of Ethan Bedgood and Lane Hutchinson for much of the season. The pair is hitting .367 and .356, respectively, while combining for 15 doubles, five home runs, and 41 RBI. At least one of the pair leads the Patriots in average, hits, OPS, doubles, RBI, total bases, slugging, and on-base percentage.
- The Patriots pitching staff sees Rawley Hector lead the starters with a 3.30 ERA over 30 innings pitched. He has 26 strikeouts and just 11 earned runs. From the bullpen, Kolby Parker has put together a strong effort, now posting a 2.25 ERA over eight innings pitched while striking out six and allowing just two earned runs.
HILLTOPPERS NOTES AND TRENDS
- Thus far on the season, St. Edward's is 10-12 on the year with an even 10-10 record in LSC play. They hold a series win over Texas A&M-Kingsville and splits in their three most recent LSC series. They are coming off of a 2-2 split with UT Permian Basin and are winners of their last two games.
- The Hilltoppers are led by Diego Solis in their lineup. The junior catcher is hitting .351 on the year with 11 RBI and three extra base hits.
- On the pitching side, Jakub Rayfield has been dealing for the starters. He holds a 1.45 ERA over 31 innings pitched and a 3-0 record. He has allowed just five earned runs and has struck out 26. From the bullpen, it is Austin Essex leading the way with a 1.23 ERA. He has thrown 14.2 innings while striking out 13 and allowing just two earned runs.
- Ryan Femath leads the Hilltoppers program and is in his first season. He joined the staff back in the fall of 2022 after serving as an assistant coach at St. Mary's.
