Patriots Prevail in 23-Run, Extra-Inning Affair Against Hilltoppers

TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler prevailed in extra innings with a 12-11 victory over St. Edward's on Sunday night at Mike Carter Field.

The Patriots walked it off in the bottom of the tenth to tie the series at 1-1 following the Hilltoppers successful hold of their lead in the resumed game one on Sunday evening. UT Tyler and St. Edward's immediately turned it around at Mike Carter Field following the 4-3 game one decision for the Hilltoppers, and slugged their way to a contest that featured a combined five homers, 36 hits and 23 runs scored.

UT Tyler led by four runs at three different points in the game, only to see the Hilltoppers come back and take a one-run advantage in the top of the seventh. UT Tyler utilized a shutdown effort in relief by Nick Niebur, a tying solo homer from Blake LaBuda in the eighth and then a walkoff RBI single from Lane Hutchinson in the 10th to come out on top.

Senior Ethan Bedgood capped off a four-run first inning for the Patriots with a two-run homer. St. Edward's cut the lead to 4-3 with three runs in the third, but UT Tyler extended a multi-run advantage for a second time in the game with a three-run bottom of the fifth.

The Patriots notched four hits in that frame, utilizing RBI singles from Hutchinson and senior Austin Ochoa and a wild pitch, to lead 7-3. Hutchinson went 4-for-6 at the plate and served as one of three Patriots to notch multi-RBI efforts.

Starter Garrett Arredondo went 5.0 innings, allowing three earned runs and nine hits, before turning it over to the UT Tyler bullpen in the top of the sixth. St. Edward's hit two homers in that top of the sixth inning, a solo shot and a two-run blast to draw back within one at 7-6.

UT Tyler answered with a third straight frame of three runs in the bottom of the sixth, all of which came off the bat of senior Nathan Carriere on a three-run homer to deep center. That homer was the fourth of the game between the two teams and gave the Patriots a third four-run advantage.

St. Edward's came right back again and jumped ahead for the first time in the game with a five-run seventh inning. Niebur took over with two outs in that inning and struckout five consecutive Hilltoppers following an RBI single to the first batter he faced.

Senior Blake LuBuda led off the bottom of the eighth with the fifth homer of the game, a solo shot to left that tied the game at 11-11. Niebur effectively quieted the Hilltopper offense with a top of the ninth and 10th innings that were both ended on double plays from the UT Tyler defense.

LaBuda got aboard with a one-out walk in the 10th, moved over to second on a Carriere single, and scored on the game-winning RBI single to left field from Hutchinson on the ensuing at bat.

Niebur moved to 2-2 on the year with the win, striking out six batters in 3.1 innings of work, and scattered three hits. LaBuda, Carriere and Ochoa all finished with three hits.

LaBuda scored four times and drove in an RBI on his solo homer.

Both clubs finished with 18 hits on the night.

The series will conclude tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. back at Irwin Field with a doubleheader of seven inning games.
