Last weekend saw the Patriots host St. Edward's and come away with a 3-1 series win. The Patriots dropped the first game 4-3 after it was suspended from Saturday due to weather. From there, the Patriots exploded with 39 total runs over the final three games to pick up their second straight series win.
 
REGIONAL ATTENTION
 
The Patriots were ranked #5 in the NCBWA South Central Regional Rankings this week, marking the third straight week they held at that spot. Joining the Patriots in the poll is West Texas A&M at the top spot, Angelo State, Colorado Mesa, and Lubbock Christian to help round out the top five.
 
PATRIOTS NOTES AND TRENDS
 
  • UT Tyler finished the 2023 season 39-19 overall and 34-14 in LSC play on the way to finishing 3rd in the LSC and making the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the Division II era.
  • The Patriots defended Irwin Field in huge way last season, going 22-5 in games at home. Going back to their first season of Division II eligibility (2022), the Patriots are now 46-21 inside Irwin Field.
  • Head Coach Brent Porche enters his eighth season with UT Tyler and holds a record of 234-112 with the Patriots. He holds a career record of 381-195 in his 11 total seasons.
  • With the March 10th win over Texas A&M-Kingsville, Coach Porche became the all-time winningest coach in UT Tyler Baseball history, surpassing James Vilade for the top spot.
  • The Patriots will return several key contributors from the 2023 season, including All-Americans Garrett Arredondo and Dylan Blomquist, as well as All-Region nods Lane Hutchinson and Austin Ochoa. LSC Freshman of the Year Kaston Mason makes his return, as well as All-LSC nods Ethan Bedgood and Miles Clack.
  • For the Patriots offense, they have been led by the duo of Lane Hutchinson and Ethan Bedgood for much of the season. The pair is hitting .369 and .361, respectively, while combining for 18 doubles, seven home runs, and 48 RBI. At least one of the pair leads the Patriots in average, hits, runs, OPS, doubles, home runs, RBI, total bases, walks, slugging, and on-base percentage.
  • The Patriots pitching staff sees Garrett Arredondo lead the starters in ERA, posting a 2.51 line in 28.2 innings pitched. He has 19 strikeouts and has allowed just eight earned runs. From the bullpen, Kolby Parker has posted a 1.35 ERA over 13.1 innings pitched while striking out seven and allowing just two earned runs.
 
BUFFS NOTES AND TRENDS
 
  • #4 West Texas A&M comes into the weekend at a record of 19-7 overall and 18-6 in LSC play. Most recently they took three of four from UT Permian Basin on the road in Odessa.
  • The Buffs are hitting .331 as a team, with Ryan Camacho and Dylan Fesperman leading the way. They are hitting .404 and .400, respectively, and have combined for 50 RBI. Fesperman has 15 total extra base hits, while Camacho is the team leader in on-base percentage.
  • Leading the pitching staff is Matt Milner, who holds an ERA of 5.46 on the season over 31.1 innings pitched. He has allowed 19 earned runs while posting 21 strikeouts. From their bullpen, Reese Miller has posted a 0.90 ERA over 20 innings. He has allowed just two earned runs while striking out 26.
  • Matt Vanderburg is at the helm of the program, posting a career record of 497-280 in 16 seasons, all with the Buffs.
