KINGSVILLE, TEXAS - #6 UT Tyler collected a pair of 5-3 wins over Texas A&M-Kingsville on the road on Thursday night.
UT Tyler struck for 13 hits in the first victory of the day and then leaned on effective relief pitching from
Crimson Bryant and
Christin Haygood after a fast start offensively for both teams in the second win of the day.
Sam Schott and
Nicole Price were the catalysts at the plate for the UT Tyler offense, each notching five hits on the afternoon.
The Patriots move to 30-7 overall and 21-5 in Lone Star Conference play with the wins.
Game One
UT Tyler notched 13 hits as a team and scored runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to win 5-3 over the Javelinas in game one.
A bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the third gave Texas A&M-Kingsville a 3-2 advantage after UT Tyler put a pair of early runs on the board in the top of the second. RBI doubles from
Courtney Plocheck and
Michelle Arias in the fifth and sixth tied the game and then gave UT Tyler a lead that was eventually extended to 5-3 courtesy of an RBI single by Schott in the top of the sixth.
That RBI single from Schott was the third base hit of the day for the Longview, Texas native, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Plocheck went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, while Price,
Cassidi Mullen and
Tara Stewart each added multi-hit efforts as well.
Stewart drove in the first run of the game on an RBI single and then scored the second run of the frame following a Price single to make it 2-0 in favor of UT Tyler. Texas A&M-Kingsville gained the lead in the bottom of the third with the aforementioned bases-clearing triple that made it 3-2.
Junior
Christin Haygood took over for starter
Kaylee Davis from that point forward and picked up the win by working through the next 4.0 innings unscathed. Haygood conceded just a pair of hits and struckout four Javelinas.
UT Tyler on the otherhand stayed busy at the plate, tying the game in the top of the fourth on a two-out double by Plocheck and taking the lead on an RBI double from Arias in the top of the fifth. Schott's insurance run in the sixth proved irrelevant to the final outcome as Haygood worked around a single in the sixth and retired Texas A&M-Kingsville in order in the seventh.
Haygood moved to 6-0 on the year with the win.
Game Two
Bryant and Haygood combined to settle the Javelinas at the plate after both teams started off hot in the second 5-3 win for the Patriots.
Six runs came across between the teams in their first two trips to the plate, including four runs for UT Tyler in the top of the second. That four-run frame answered two Javelina runs in the bottom of the first that gave Texas A&M-Kingsville a quick 2-0 lead.
UT Tyler loaded the bases in that second inning, scored the first of four runs on a hit by pitch of
JT Smith, and then added three more runs with a two-RBI single from Price and a sac fly from Plocheck.
Freshman
Crimson Bryant, who took over in the bottom of the first inning, struckout three consecutive Javelinas to end that first frame, and then sat the side down in order in the bottom of the second to settle the Texas A&M-Kingsville offense. Bryant worked around an error and a walk in the third and then retired six straight Javelinas over the fourth and fifth innings.
Scott and Arias switched places with a pair of doubles in the fifth to give UT Tyler a 5-2 advantage. A leadoff homer from the Javelinas in the sixth brough the score to it's eventual 5-3 final.
Haygood came on for her second relief appearance of the day in the bottom of the sixth, retiring all four batters she faced to collect a save.
Price went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and Schott 2-for-4 with a run scored. Bryant collected the win after going 5.2 innings, striking out seven and allowing just three hits.
