TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler baseball looked dominant on both sides of the ball in both games in Friday's action as they took a 19-1 win and a 6-0 win over Eastern New Mexico.
GAME ONE
The story of game one was another gem from the Patriots pitching staff combined with an offensive explosion from the lineup as they took a huge 19-1 win.
Starter
Josh Pelfrey picked up the win by going four full innings while scattering just four hits and not allowing a run on the night. He allowed two hits in the first and third innings, but worked his magic and got out of both jams unscathed.
He tacked on three strikeouts on the night in his four scoreless innings of work as he improved to 2-1 on the season.
For the Patriots offense, they got it rolling in the first inning and never looked back. An error allowed the leadoff runner to get on, and a fielder's choice followed, but two walks, a wild pitch and a single plated the first two runs of the night. Three batters later, it was a clutch two out single into right field by
Hayden Clearman to plate two more and make it 4-0.
In the fourth, the Patriots connected again, taking advantage of another walk, error and a single to laod the bases for
Blake LaBuda with no outs. He tattooed a home run to left field for a grand slam to quickly make it 8-0.
Clearman again came up clutch with an RBI single to score
Drew Schmidt, and he came around to score after a single and a pair of walks. The final run of the inning came from the bat of
Ethan Bedgood, as he broke the all-time UT Tyler career sacrifice fly record with his fly ball to left field to plate
Connor Clark.
Just one inning later, the Patriots tacked on six more runs on just two hits as they drew three walks and a hit by pitch. Two of those walks brought in runs, setting up bases loaded for
Nathan Carriere. Carriere delivered the same shot that LaBuda did, drilling a home run to deep left center field for the second grand slam of the game for the Patriots.
A solo home run off of reliever
Brayden Freeman plated the only run of the night for the Greyhounds, marking the lone blemish on a strong save from the left hander.
The Patriots would add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Schmidt and then an error later in the inning.
All but three starters recorded a hit, and all but one starter recorded a run scored.
Blake LaBuda recorded five RBI in the contest, while Carriere and Clearman each had four.
Brayden Freeman picked up his first save of the year, going three full innings while allowing just two hits and one run while striking out one.
GAME TWO
After the offensive explosion in game one, the Patriots toned it down a notch on their way to a 6-0 win in game two.
Again they rode the back of a strong start, this time seeing
Wyatt Wick throw a complete game shutout while allowing just five hits and striking out five as he picked up his first win in a Patriots uniform.
Two of those hits came in the first inning, along with a hit by pitch to load the bases, but Wick posted a pair of strikeouts to end the inning with the game knotted at 0-0.
In the home half of the first, the Patriots posted their first run on a fielder's choice that included an error at second base that plated Carriere, before
Austin Ochoa tacked on a sacrifice fly to center field to plate
Lane Hutchinson.
Wick faced just one over the minimum over the next two innings, allowing the Patriots offense to get back to work in the third. That third inning provided the big hit for the offense, as a Hutchinson single set up Ochoa with one on and one out. He delivered a high fly ball that cleared the left field wall, making it a 4-0 ball game to support Wick's dominant effort on the mound.
Ethan Bedgood would tack on another run in the fourth, reaching on an RBI fielder's choice that plated Clark. The final run came in the sixth, as LaBuda joined the sacrifice fly festivities by sending one deep to left field to score
Jordan Ardoin.
Wick posted just the second complete game effort of the year for the Patriots, and sat down seven Greyhounds at one point in the contest.
Seven Patriots recorded a hit in game two, with
Austin Ochoa leading the way going 1-for-2 with a run and three RBI.
UT Tyler now goes for their first series sweep of the season beginning at 1 p.m. inside Irwin Field.
