TYLER, TEXAS – Senior
Ethan Bedgood delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to deliver the final blow in a back-and-forth 12-11 win over UT Permian Basin on Sunday afternoon.
The four-year Patriot who etched his name atop the UT Tyler all-time hits list on Saturday, closed out senior weekend for the Patriots with a series split in a game that featured seven lead changes and three ties between the two teams. Bedgood was one of three seniors alongside
Nathan Carriere and
Austin Ochoa to power the UT Tyler offense to 20 hits.
Carriere was a homer away from the cycle, going 3-for-5 while Ochoa posted a 3-for-4 outing. Carriere's big day at the plate extended his hit streak to 24 straight.
UT Tyler took a 10-8 advantage into the eighth inning and a one-run lead into the ninth, but a two-run top of the eighth from UT Permian Basin and a similar answer with a run in the top of the ninth forced the Patriots to turn to Bedgood for the walk-off victory. Senior
Jordan Ardoin touched home for the winning run in that bottom of the ninth, leading off the inning with a double down the leftfield line.
Carriere was intentionally walked in the ensuing at-bat and then moved up to second behind Ardoin at third on a single from
Lane Hutchinson. Bedgood delivered with the bases loaded with what was the 33
rd hit of the afternoon between the two teams to end the game.
UT Tyler opened three-run leads at the end of the first and fifth innings, the former of which in their first trip to the plate thanks to Bedgood's two-run homer that made it 3-0. UT Permian Basin answered with the first of two leads in the game after a four-run top of the second.
UT Tyler rattled off a four spot of their own a few innings later in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by RBI single from freshman
Connor Clark and Ochoa. That made it 7-4 in favor of the Patriots, a lead that wouldn't last through the next trip to the plate for the Falcons as they notched another four-run inning in the sixth to jump back ahead 8-7.
Carriere helped put UT Tyler ahead 10-8 at the end of seven with a two-RBI double, his second extra-base of the afternoon, before the Patriots ultimately came out ahead in the sprint to the end in the eighth and ninth.
Four different arms saw time on the mound for the UT Tyler. Starter
Garrett Arredondo with 2.0 complete innings without conceding an earned run.
Kolby Parker and
Nick Niebur each tossed 3.0 innings from that point before
Miles Clack came on for the ninth and ultimately earned the win.
Eight of the 20 hits for UT Tyler went for extra bases. Seven different Patriots notched multi-hit efforts.
Bedgood finished his afternoon 3-for-5 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored.
UT Tyler will enjoy and off weekend next weekend before returning to play on Tuesday, April, 24rd against Southern Arkansas.
