11-1 Patriot Victory over Texas A&M International Notches Win no. 40 on the Year

LAREDO, TEXAS – #5 UT Tyler put win no. 40 of the 2024 season in the books with an 11-1 run-rule victory over Texas A&M International on Sunday afternoon.

The victory is the 13th in a row for the Patriots and secured an 11th straight Lone Star Conference series victory in the process. UT Tyler led 8-0 after the first three innings and used a trio of arms in the circle to limit Texas A&M International to just three hits on the day.

UT Tyler stands 40-7 on the year and 31-5 in Lone Star Conference play.

Sam Schott and JT Smith both hit a pair of doubles and finished as two of four Patriots to go for multi-hit efforts in the game. UT Tyler posted 12 hits as a team, five of which went for extra bases.

Smith scored the first run of the game on an RBI fielder's choice by Clarisa Zapata in the second, and then hit her second double of the day in an eight-run top half of the third inning for UT Tyler in her next trip to the plate. The Patriots totaled seven hits in that inning alone, including leadoff singles from Nicole Price, Courtney Plocheck and Audrey Escamilla.

The Escamilla single plated Price for a 2-0 UT Tyler advantage that was quickly extended to 4-0 with the Smith double and a sac fly from freshman Makayla Garcia. Schott and Escamilla provided the impactful hits with two outs on the board to help UT Tyler drive home five more runs with a two-RBI double from Schott and an RBI single from Escamilla.

Schott then added the second run of a two-run top of the fourth for UT Tyler with her second double of the day that scored Michelle Arias. Senior Cassidi Mullen put the first run of the inning on the board that drove in Zapata's one-out double.

Starter Genesis Armendariz worked quickly through the first three innings before turning the ball over to freshman Crimson Bryant in the bottom of the fourth. Armendariz moved to 12-5 on the year with the win, working 3.0 complete innings while allowing just a pair of hits.

Texas A&M International managed their only run of the series after being shutout in both games Saturday after a single and walk put runners aboard in that fourth inning. Bryant induced an infield popup, conceded an infield single that scored a run, and then struck out the next two batters she faced to work through the frame with UT Tyler ahead 11-1.

Junior Kaylee Davis came for a three-up, three-down bottom of the fifth inning.

The UT Tyler pitching staff in total struckout six and allowed just five base runners in the game.

Schott went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Price, Escamilla and Smith each totaled two hits as well.

UT Tyler will return home to Irwin Field this week to close out the regular season with six games throughout the week. The Patriots will take on St. Mary's on Tuesday and Wednesday and Lubbock Christian on Saturday and Sunday.
