Patriots Hit the Road for Matchup with Aggies

A four game series awaits UT Tyler as they head to Lawton, Oklahoma to face off with Cameron this weekend.

The Patriots picked up their first series sweep of the year over the weekend, taking down Eastern New Mexico at Irwin Field. The Patriots outscored the Greyhounds 34-4 in the four game set, including posting a pair of shutouts to close out the series.
 
NATIONAL ATTENTION
 
The Patriots have started receiving votes in the NCBWA Top 25 poll for the first time since week three. The Patriots received two points this week in the rankings. Joining them in the poll from the South Central Region is #4 West Texas A&M, #11 Colorado Mesa, #18 Angelo State, and RV Lubbock Christian.

Ethan Bedgood is already going down as one of the best hitters in Patriots history, as he owns both the career RBI and sacrifice fly records. Now he is approaching several more as his career winds down.

PATRIOTS NOTES AND TRENDS
 
  • UT Tyler finished the 2023 season 39-19 overall and 34-14 in LSC play on the way to finishing 3rd in the LSC and making the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the Division II era.
  • The Patriots defended Irwin Field in huge way last season, going 22-5 in games at home. Going back to their first season of Division II eligibility (2022), the Patriots are now 50-21 inside Irwin Field.
  • Head Coach Brent Porche enters his eighth season with UT Tyler and holds a record of 239-115 with the Patriots. He holds a career record of 386-198 in his 11 total seasons.
  • With the March 10th win over Texas A&M-Kingsville, Coach Porche became the all-time winningest coach in UT Tyler Baseball history, surpassing James Vilade for the top spot.
  • The Patriots will return several key contributors from the 2023 season, including All-Americans Garrett Arredondo and Dylan Blomquist, as well as All-Region nods Lane Hutchinson and Austin Ochoa. LSC Freshman of the Year Kaston Mason makes his return, as well as All-LSC nods Ethan Bedgood and Miles Clack.
  • For the Patriots offense, they have been led by the duo of Lane Hutchinson and Ethan Bedgood for much of the season. The pair is hitting .378 and .372, respectively, while combining for 99 hits, 67 RBI, and 34 extra base hits. At least one of the pair leads the Patriots in average, hits, runs, doubles, home runs, RBI, total bases, and hit by pitches.
  • The Patriots pitching staff sees Rawley Hector lead the way, as he has posted a 3.45 ERA over 47 innings pitched. He has allowed just 18 earned runs for the year while posting 39 total strikeouts.
 
AGGIES NOTES AND TRENDS
 
  • Cameron comes in this week at a record of 8-25 on the season and 7-25 in LSC play. They have lost their last four games in a row, a sweep at the hands of UT Permian Basin on the road.
  • The Aggies are led at the plate by Jayce Clem, who is hitting .355 on the year with 20 doubles and seven homers while driving in 25 and getting on base at a .457 clip.
  • Their starters are led by Drew Henderson, who has a 6.04 ERA and a record of 6-5 over 56.2 innings pitched. He has allowed 38 earned runs while striking out 54 hitters this year.
  • Kyle Williams leads the program and is in the midst of his fifth season. His entire head coaching career has been at Cameron, and he holds a record of 49-143 thus far.
