LONGWOOD, FLA. – Freshman
Makayla Garcia drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to push no. 2 seeded UT Tyler into the winner's bracket of the 2024 NCAA Division II World Series with a 2-1 victory over no. 7 seeded Augustana.
UT Tyler answered the first run of the game by Augustana with a pair of RBI singles from
Michelle Arias and Garcia in the sixth and eighth innings to start their third straight trip to the NCAA DII World Series with a victory. Junior
Christin Haygood, who has appeared in all six games thus far in the NCAA Division II National Tournament, registered a season-high eight strikeouts in her complete game effort.
The Patriots will meet the winner of the no. 6 seeded Western Washington and no. 3 seeded Wilmington winner tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 p.m. CST.
Haygood matched Augustana's starting pitcher Grace Glazer step-for-step in five scoreless innings to start the game. The junior worked around a leadoff single in the top of the first and then stranded a leadoff double for the Vikings in the top of the fifth inning to answer her first two tests of the game.
UT Tyler, who hits 10 singles in the game, started to generate offensive pressure with a pair of singles in the fourth inning despite leaving both runners aboard.
Augustana ultimately put the first run on the board, however, with a solo homer that just barely cleared the centerfield fence at Boombah-Soldiers Creek Park. The Patriots immediately found a response with a two-out RBI single from Arias that plated junior
Nicole Price.
Price led off that bottom half of the sixth inning with a single, advanced to second on a
Courtney Plocheck groundout, and then scored from second on the RBI base hit from Arias.
Haygood retired the Vikings in order in the top of the seventh and then stranded a two-out single in the first inning of extra-innings in the top of the eight.
Another leadoff single, this time from Plocheck, helped the Patriots once again in the bottom of the eighth as a Garcia chopper got through the Vikings defense into leftfield and allowed Plocheck to slide home for the walk-off victory.
Garcia and Plocheck each went 2-for-4 at the plate while Arias and Garcia were credited with RBI.
Haygood conceded just six hits and a single earned run to a high-powered Augustana offense.
The win makes it six in a row for the Patriots in the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
