A LOOK BACK

The Patriots started the 2024 season with a 1-0-1 record after two games played last weekend. On Thursday night the Patriots squared off with DBU, and a late goal from Julian Smith in the final 10 minutes provided the program with a 1-1 draw to begin the 2024 campaign. On Saturday evening, the Patriots played Jarvis Christian, and again Julian Smith played the hero, scoring with just under two minutes remaining to give the Patriots a 1-0 victory and their first win of the year.

LSC PRESEASON POLL

The Patriots were selected ninth in the annual LSC Men's Soccer Preseason Poll, garnering 124 total points. Midwestern State earned 32 first place votes on their way to 362 total points and being selected to repeat as conference champions. West Texas A&M and St. Mary's round out the top three of the poll, with the Rattlers garnering one first place vote.

EARLY CONTRIBUTIONS

Through the first two games, it has been a mix of newcomers and returners leading the offense. Graduate student transfer Julian Smith is the Patriots lone goal scorer thus far, but the Patriots have posted three assists thus far. Two of those have come from returners in Omar Belahna and Sam Coad, and the third is from newcomer Oscar Samuel Hernandez.

In shots taken, Smith leads again, but Bryan Rivas-Guzman follows closely behind, and seven other returners have recorded at least one shot thus far in the early goings.

THE MOUNTAIN LIONS

On Thursday, the Patriots will take on UCCS (Colorado-Colorado Springs) in what will be the first matchup ever between the two programs at 5 p.m. MT. The Mountain Lions are 1-0-1 through their first weekend of play, coming away with a 1-1 tie to Cal State San Marcos and a 4-1 victory over Azusa Pacific.

Nick Walker leads the Mountain Lions in goals scored thus far, posting three goals and a game-winning goal on six shots. Rory Scott and Cole Venable have each chipped in one goal. Soren Russell leads the program in the net, as he has started both games thus far and made six saves.

UCCS is led by Lewis Wilcox, who is in his 4th season as head coach and sixth year with the program. He has compiled a career record of 52-32-14 with a 30-19-11 record at UCCS. While at the helm, he has led the Moutain Lions to a pair of RMAC semifinals appearances and an NCAA tournament appearance.

THE THUNDERWOLVES

On Saturday, the Patriots will square off with CSU Pueblo at 1 p.m. MT in what will be their second ever meeting. The first meeting came last season, with the two teams battling to a 3-3 score at Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex. In that game, the Patriots got goals from Lukas Paulun, Craig Chisholm, and Hugo Marques to get the key draw in non-conference play.

Through two games, the Thunderwolves are 2-0, with a 3-0 victory over Western Oregon and a 2-0 victory over Northwest Nazarene. Caio Oliveira leads the way for the program in goals scored, posting three on five shots. He has also added a pair of assists. Tobi Osifodunrin and Shjon Andrews each have also recorded a goal.

Oliver Twelvetrees is the head man for CSU Pueblo, and over five seasons has posted a record of 59-17-9. Last season, he led the program to the NCAA National Championship game, where they fell to Franklin Pierce. It was the second consecutive season the Thunderwolves made the title game, also falling to Franklin Pierce in 2022.

NEXT UP

Following this week's action, the Patriots will return home for three straight games at Citizen's 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex. On September 21st, the Patriots will take on Harding in a game that will double as Senior Day for the program.

On September 25th, the Patriots host St. Mary's in what will be their final non-conference game at 6:30 p.m., and on October 2nd the Patriots open up LSC competition by hosting DBU.
