2023 RECAP

Last season the Patriots finished the year at a record of 5-4-8 overall, but posted a record of 1-3-5 in Lone Star Conference play. That record posted a ninth place finish in the LSC standings but the Patriots remained in the conference tournament race until the final week of the regular season.

A NEW LOOK

The Patriots will have a fresh look this season as they welcome in 16 newcomers to the fold, including six total freshman. Part of that new look also includes Division I, Division II, and NJCAA transfer players.

Replacing the Patriots offense will be key, as the top four goal scorers from a year ago have each moved on from the program. Holding down the offense will be Omar Belahna and Hugo Marques, the only two returning players to score more than a goal last season.

SOLID RETURNING EXPERIENCE

Despite the wave of newcomers for the program, the Patriots will still have plenty of experience to rely on as they look to bounce back after the 2023 campaign. William Kenne and Manaka Sato look to be large contributors to the defense after each appearing in 16 games for the Patriots a season ago and combining to play over 1,700 total minutes. Bryan Rivas-Guzman continues in the midfield and brings 39 total caps for UT Tyler, along with Solomao Saboia, who played 14 games and 894 minutes last season.

HEAD COACH KENNY JONES

Coach Kenny Jones returns to the sidelines for his 23rd season at the helm of the program and remains the only head coach in the history of the program. He has compiled a career record of 258-124-57, with 236-96-53 being his record at UT Tyler throughout the years.

Throughout his tenure, the Patriots have collected 5 ASC regular season titles and the 2003 USCAA National Championship. Since joining Division II, Coach Jones has led the program to a pair of LSC Tournament appearances, including a semifinals appearance in the Spring 2021 season.

LSC PRESEASON POLL

The Patriots were selected ninth in the annual LSC Men's Soccer Preseason Poll, garnering 124 total points. Midwestern State earned 32 first place votes on their way to 362 total points and being selected to repeat as conference champions. West Texas A&M and St. Mary's round out the top three of the poll, with the Rattlers garnering one first place vote.

AN ALL-PATRIOTS BATTLE

Thursday marks the season opener for UT Tyler, and they will hit the road to take on DBU. This game will mark the 13th contest against DBU all-time, and it also marks five of the last six years that the two teams will meet in non-conference play. In the previous four instances of non-conference play, UT Tyler is 4-0 with three of those wins coming by just one goal.

DBU will be led on offense by Peyton Voelker, who returns as one of the top players in the LSC and was named to the LSC Players to Watch list. He played in all 20 games for DBU last season, notching 11 goals and six assists on his way to 28 total points.

He is joined by teammate Hunter Dierlam, who was also named to the LSC Players to Watch list. Dierlam posted 15 games played and 13 starts last season while logging 1,173 minutes, three goals, and one assist.

Jess Jobe is at the helm of the program for DBU and enters his four season. He has led the team to the LSC Tournament in each of the last two years, including a trip to the LSC Tournament Championship match last season. In his tenure, DBU has compiled a record of 18-22-11.

A REMATCH WITH THE BULLDOGS

Jarvis Christian will return to the Patriots home turf for the second consecutive year on Saturday, and the Patriots will look to repeat last year's 4-0 victory. The Bulldogs have played to a 1-2 record thus far, picking up a 1-0 win over Wayland Baptist in their most recent match last Saturday.

Daniel Sierra and Roberto Morales have each scored a goal for the Bulldogs this season, while goalkeeper Victor Morales has made 11 saves and posted a save percentage of 84.6% thus far.

Carlos Martinez is the head coach of Jarvis Christian, and the 2024 season will be his first at the helm after being named head coach on July 18.

NEXT UP

Following this week's action, the Patriots will embark on a long trip to Colorado where they will take on a pair of RMAC teams in UCCS and CSU Pueblo. The Patriots play UCCS on September 12, and CSU Pueblo on September 14 in what will be their last two road non-conference games.
