Whataburger Week Nine Preview: Men’s Soccer

The Patriots face just one game this week with just two matches remaining on their schedule for the year.

PATRIOTS NOTES AND TRENDS

  • UT Tyler went 4-6-7 in 2024 and 2-2-6 in LSC play on their way to their third berth in the LSC Tournament in program history.
  • The only coach in program history, Kenny Jones, is in the midst of his 26th season as a head coach and 23rd season with the Patriots. He is 243-107-65 with UT Tyler and is 265-135-69 all-time.
  • 2024 All-LSC Honorees Oscar SosaDanny DeMarais, and Diego Cruz lead 14 total returners back into the fray as they look to push the program to the next step.
  • DeMarais led the team in goals in 2024 with five and in points with 12. Of the nine different goal scorers for the Patriots last season, four make their return, and those four accounted for 12 total goals.
  • As a team, the Patriots are scoring 1.20 goals per game on 11.5 shots per game with a 0.394 shots on goal percentage.
  • Defensively, their opponents are scoring 1.33 goals per game on 10.5 shots per game with a .420 shots on goal percentage.
  • Luan Rangel is up to seven goals on the year and 15 points, both team-highs. Those seven goals are the most in a season for the program in the Division II era, and the most by a player in a season since 2018.
  • Niclas Becker has been the primary goaltender this season, posting 12 starts. He has played 1058:17 minutes with 36 total saves, a .720 save percentage, and three shutouts.

KEEPER OF THE WEEK

After a huge week for the Patriots, Niclas Becker has been named the LSC Goalkeeper of the Week, the first Patriots keeper to earn the award since 2022. The junior made three saves in a 3-2 win over Texas A&M International last Wednesday, and then backed that up with a monster day on Sunday as he made seven saves while posting his third shutout of the year against St. Edward's. Also, that shutout over the Hilltoppers was their first time being shutout this season.

THE LSC UPDATE

UT Dallas remains on top of the LSC standings with 19 points. Midwestern State, Lubbock Christian, St. Edward's, and DBU round out the top five.

The LSC Tournament will consist of six teams, with UT Dallas and Sul Ross State being ineligible due to the NCAA transition process. That means that Oklahoma Christian would slide into the fifth spot, and West Texas A&M and UT Tyler remain tied for the final spot.

THE EAGLES

Oklahoma Christian is 6-8-1 on the year and 3-6 in LSC play with just one LSC game remaining on their schedule. They are currently seventh in the LSC standings with nine points.

The Eagles are averaging 1.60 goals per game while allowing 1.40. They are posting 12.2 shots per game while allowing 10.6 to their opponents. Individually, Ethan Nakolo leads the Eagles, LSC, and the NCAA in goals with 17 on the year. He has two assists and 36 total points on 57 shots.

UT Tyler leads the all-time series at 5-2-1 that dates back to 2019. The last four meetings have been split at 2-2, with each team going 1-1 on their home turf.

LAST TIME OUT

Last week, the Patriots took a 3-2 win over Texas A&M International and a 3-0 dominant win over St. Edward's. Luan Rangel scored three goals, two against the Dustdevils and one against the Hilltoppers. Carlos Galan also scored the first two goals of his career against the Hilltoppers.
