EDMOND, OKLAHOMA – UT Tyler men's soccer took down Oklahoma Christian 1-0 on Saturday night in a big LSC matchup on the road that had all sorts of postseason implications.
The victory gives the Patriots a critical three points and allows them to pass the Eagles in the LSC standings, meaning they will now make a second consecutive appearance in the LSC Tournament as no team can catch the Patriots for the final place in the seeding.
Jason Verhoogen scored the one and only goal of the match in the 75
th minute on a well struck liner that was deflected past the Eagles keeper while goalkeeper
Niclas Becker put together another brilliant showing in goal.
After a scoreless opening half, both teams traded looks in a balanced battle that saw each side record 13 shots apiece. Goalkeeper
Niclas Becker anchored the UT Tyler defense with a composed performance, collecting four saves en route to his fourth shutout of the season. Becker made several key stops, including a diving save midway through the second half that preserved the deadlock and set the stage for the Patriots' breakthrough.
That breakthrough came in the 75th minute, when freshman
Jason Verhoogen found the back of the net for his second goal of the season. The play developed off a well-timed assist from
Tony Ngombi, who maneuvered into space along the right side before slotting a low cross to Verhoogen at the top of the box. Verhoogen placed his shot just past the Oklahoma Christian keeper to give UT Tyler the lead with just over 15 minutes to play.
From there, the Patriots' back line stayed organized to fend off a flurry of late Eagle attacks. Oklahoma Christian earned multiple corners in the closing minutes, but the UT Tyler defense held strong to secure the shutout.
The Patriots took 13 total shots with five going on goal for the night. Verhoogen scored on his lone shot of the night and arguably the biggest shot of the year for UT Tyler.
UT Tyler will host UT Dallas on Wednesday night to close out their 2025 regular season. That match is set for a 7 p.m. kick at Citizens 1
st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex and will play a hand in determining the seedings for the LSC Tournament.
