TYLER, TEXAS – #1 ranked UT Tyler softball delivered a doubleheader sweep of #23 Lubbock Christian on Saturday in their first home action of the 2025 season. The Patriots moved to 15-0 overall and 6-0 in LSC play with the wins.
GAME ONE
Game one of the day saw the Patriots use timely hitting as six different players recorded a hit and four recorded an RBI in a team effort win.
That effort was led however by
Primrose Aholelei in the circle, as she went all seven innings while allowing just four hits and two runs. She struck out 10 batters and issued three walks. She would get into trouble in the first inning after a pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt put a pair of runners in scoring position with one out, but she answered with two straight strikeouts to end the rally.
That effort continued in the second, as she struck out the side in a scoreless frame. In the third through fifth innings, Aholelei allowed just one hit while striking out three more members of the Lady Chaps.
That dominant effort in the opening innings allowed the Patriots offense to take the early lead, as they scored all six of their runs in the second, third, and fourth frames.
The second inning saw
Taryn Barney single home pinch runner
Berlyn Grossman to begin the scoring, and
Ka'Lyn Watson would score on a throwing error to make it 2-0. The lead would double just two batters later, as
JT Smith drilled a double to deep center field that plated both
Miia Campos and Barney.
Watson added a single run in the third inning as she hit a towering home run to center field, and in the fourth inning Campos added her own home run as she drove one over the right field fence to make it 6-0.
The only blemish on the day for Aholelei would come in the sixth inning, as the Lady Chaps connected on a two run home run to center field. She would respond with a three up, three down inning in the seventh and closed off the 6-2 win.
Ka'Lyn Watson went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.
JT Smith drove in a pair of runs and
Miia Campos scored two herself while also driving home one.
GAME TWO
Game two of the day saw the Patriots again put together early offense, scoring all eight runs in the first four innings to put a comfortable distance between themselves and the Lady Chaps.
That scoring started in the first inning, as
Alaunah Almaraz drove home
JT Smith with an RBI single. The Patriots used the long ball again in the second inning, this time as
Miia Campos hit her second homer of the day to center field to drive home three more runs and make it a 4-0 game.
Two more runs would come across the plate in the third, as
Jordyn De Los Santos singled up the middle to drive home
Hailey Fannin and
Bailey Krolczyk to make it 6-0.
While the Patriots got off to a hot start at the plate,
Cera Blanchard put up a trio of zeros on the board on the defensive side. She would work around a single in the first inning to put up the first zero, and then sat down the next five hitters in a row over the next two innings before issuing a walk and then getting a groundout to finish the third inning,
In the fourth, the Lady Chaps would get on the board via an RBI double after taking advantage of a walk and a wild pitch. Blanchard got back on track with a strikeout but a single and a walk to load the bases would ultimately chase her from the game.
She handed the reins off to
Kaylee Davis, and she got out of the bases loaded jam as Almaraz made a bigtime defensive play by catching a line drive and doubling off the runner at second.
The Patriots would respond to the threat from the Lady Chaps with two big runs in the fourth, as Krolczyk drove home Smith on an RBI single, and Watson would drive home Krolczyk on an RBI single of her own to make it 8-1.
Davis worked a 1-2-3 fifth before the Lady Chaps drove in one final run in the sixth inning. Davis sat the Lady Chaps down 1-2-3 in the seventh inning, securing the sweep for the Patriots.
Kaylee Davis picked up the win after going the final 3.2 innings with just two hits and one earned run allowed. On offense, Campos and De Los Santos combined for five RBI and two runs scored.
JT Smith had a 2-for-4 effort with a pair of runs scored, and
Bailey Krolczyk also scored two runs while adding an RBI.
