Box Score TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler secured a 5-3 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Monday afternoon, completing the series sweep behind strong pitching and timely offense. The Patriots tallied five runs on 10 hits, with three players recording multiple hits.
Pitcher Wyatt Wick started strong, setting down the Javelinas in order in the first inning. UT Tyler's offense quickly backed him up, starting with back-to-back singles from Connor Clark and Drew Schmidt. A sacrifice fly brought in the first run, followed by a Justin Williams RBI single to right, giving the Patriots an early 2-0 lead.
Texas A&M-Kingsville responded in the second inning, scoring a run after two early singles and a fielder's choice. However, Wick limited the damage, keeping the Patriots in front 2-1.
UT Tyler extended its lead in the third, sparked by a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt to move the runner into scoring position. Ethan Menard then delivered an RBI single up the middle, making it 3-1.
Wick continued his dominance, retiring the Javelinas in order once again. The Patriots' offense stayed hot, adding another run in the bottom half of the fourth inning when Bo Willis launched a 363-foot home run—his second of the season—to extend the lead to 4-1.
The momentum carried into the fifth as Schmidt collected his second hit of the game with an infield single. He later came around to score on a Tanner Hornback RBI single to right field, pushing the lead to 5-1.
Wick finished his outing after a season-high five innings, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out two. He retired the final seven batters he faced, earning his first win of the season and lowering his ERA to 4.80. Grant Garza took over in relief in the sixth inning.
Texas A&M-Kingsville threatened in the eighth, capitalizing on three consecutive singles after the leadoff batter was retired to plate a run and cut the deficit to 5-2. A sacrifice fly brought home another run, making it 5-3 heading into the final inning.
Nick Niebur entered in the eighth and shut the door, finishing the game with 1.2 innings pitched, allowing just one hit while striking out three. He earned his first save of the year, securing the Patriots' eighth consecutive victory.
Offensively, Schmidt, Menard, and Bryce Jewell each recorded multiple hits, while Willis' home run gave him six RBIs on the season.
The combined effort propels UT Tyler to a 14-2 record on the season. Riding an eight-game winning streak, the Patriots will head to Austin, Texas, on February 28, where they will put their perfect 8-0 road record to the test against St. Edward's.
