#16 Patriots Fall to #2 Rams in Series Finale

The two teams battled in an offensive showcase but the Rams came out on top and forced a series split.

TYLER, TEXAS - #16 UT Tyler baseball fell by a score of 10-8 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon against #2 Angelo State at Irwin Field.

The two teams combined for 18 runs and 29 hits in a wild offensive afternoon for both teams.

Wyatt Wick would get the ball to start the game for the Patriots and worked a scoreless first, but the Rams took the early lead in the second inning as they singled through the right side to drive home one. That lead grew to five runs in the third inning as they scored four runs via a trio of singles and a throwing error on a steal.

The Rams scored a run in the fourth and the fifth innings, tacking on a run via a throwing error and another RBI single. Those two runs would give them a 7-0 lead, a lead they would hold up until the sixth inning.

In that bottom of the sixth inning, the Patriots would load the bases with three walks around a pair of strikeouts. Mason Hammonds would step to the plate and drill a double deep into the gap that plated all three runs, putting the Patriots on the board. Blake LaBuda added an RBI single and a wild pitch plated another run as the Patriots cut the lead down to 7-5.

The Rams however would answer again in the seventh, scoring three more runs to grow the lead back up to five runs. Those runs came via two RBI singles and an errant throw on one of those singles.

That 10-5 lead would remain until the bottom of the eighth, where the Patriots rallied yet again. The Patriots began the rally with a single and a hit by pitch, before a fielder's choice and a strikeout brought them to two outs. An error kept the Patriots going, and Bo Willis connected on a huge double to plate another run. An infield single scored another run, and the Patriots cut the lead down to just 10-8 heading into the final inning.

After a scoreless top half of the inning, the Patriots rolled into the home half with a chance to rally. Drew Schmidt would lead off with a single, and Brock Bearden added a walk to put a pair on with no outs. However, a pair of strikeouts and a fielder's choice would ice the rally and end the game.

Mason Hammonds finished the day 3-for-5 with three RBI. Tanner Hornback, Blake LaBuda, and Drew Schmidt each totaled two hits.

#16 UT Tyler will next take on Texas A&M International in their next four game series. That series begins Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Laredo, Texas.
