PORTALES, N.M. – The University of Texas at Tyler baseball program dropped both games in Sunday's doubleheader against Eastern New Mexico, marking the first time this season the Patriots have been swept in a doubleheader.
GAME ONE:
The Patriots fell just short in the first game, losing 5-4 despite managing only four hits.
The Greyhounds struck early with a leadoff home run in the first inning, followed by two singles and a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead. However, UT Tyler responded quickly in the second. After a walk and a hit-by-pitch, Brock Bearden launched his third home run of the season, giving the Patriots a brief 3-2 advantage.
Eastern New Mexico regained control in the third, capitalizing on two walks, a single, a wild pitch, and back-to-back RBI singles to go up 5-3. UT Tyler cut the deficit in the fifth when Drew Schmidt doubled and later scored on an RBI single from Bearden, but the Patriots couldn't push across another run.
Bearden and Schmidt were the only UT Tyler players with multiple hits. Schmidt finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored, while Bearden went a perfect 2-for-2, driving in all four Patriot runs.
GAME TWO:
The Greyhounds dominated game two, scoring all 13 of their runs within the first three innings en route to a decisive 13-3 victory.
Much like the first game, Eastern New Mexico started strong, plating three runs in the opening frame off two singles, a wild pitch, a triple, and a double-play groundout. The third inning proved to be the deciding factor, as the Greyhounds erupted for ten runs on seven hits, an error, four walks, and a hit-by-pitch, pushing their lead to 13-0.
UT Tyler managed to get on the board in the seventh. After another Schmidt double, Lane Epperson drove him in with an RBI single. A fielding error put another runner on, setting the stage for Joseph Dominguez, who delivered a two-run double to cap off the scoring at 13-3.
Schmidt was the only Patriot with multiple hits in game two, going 2-for-3 with another double. He finished the doubleheader 4-for-7 with three doubles, raising his season batting average to .447 while tallying 11 doubles on the year.
The Patriots will aim to salvage the series finale on Monday at 1 p.m. in Portales before returning home to Irwin Field.
