WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS - #1 UT Tyler softball completed a 3-1 weekend as they swept Midwestern State in their only two meetings of the regular season.
GAME ONE
Game one of the day saw the Patriots have to overcome an early assault by the Mustangs, as they jumped out to a 3-1 lead after just two innings.
The Patriots got on the board in the top of the first as
Ka'Lyn Watson singled home
JT Smith to make it 1-0. However, the Mustangs got to
Primrose Aholelei with a pair of solo homers in the home half to take the lead. In the second, they added another run with a double to left center, chasing Aholelei from the game.
Kaylee Davis woud take over in the second inning, and worked two straight flyouts to end the inning. That set up the Patriots offense to get back to work in the third, plating a pair of runs as
Sam Schott delivered an RBI single and
Miia Campos drove home another with a sacrifice fly.
Davis went back to work in the third, working a scoreless frame. That set up the Patriots offense in a tie game, and they would blow the game open with six runs in the inning to take control.
Abbie Behe led off with a single, and two batters later Smith belted a homer to right center for the first two runs. Two hit by pitches and a single would load the bases with two outs, and
Miia Campos stepped up and belted a grand slam to left field to put the Patriots in front 9-3 after three and a half innings.
Davis would continue her stellar work, never allowing more than one runner to reach base from the fourth through sixth innings as she shut down the Mustangs offense. The Patriots would continue to back that up, scoring another run in the sixth on a double play as
Bailey Krolczyk came around to score.
In the top of the seventh, the Patriots offense found three more insurance runs as
Angelique Rangel hit a sacrifice fly to center field, and
Jordyn De Los Santos hit a two run blast to left field.
The Mustangs would finally score a run on Davis in the home half of the seventh via a solo home run, but it would be too little too late as the Patriots took a 13-4 win.
Ka'Lyn Watson led the Patriots with three hits on the day as she went 3-for-3.
Abbie Behe also collected two hits, while Watson, Smith, De Los Santos, and Krolczyk each scored at least two runs.
Miia Campos led the Patriots in RBI, as she had five on the day, four of which came from her grand slam.
Kaylee Davis picked up the win in the circle by going the final 5.2 innings while allowing just four hits and one run. She moved to 4-0 on the year with the effort.
GAME TWO
Not long after game one concluded, weather rolled through the area and forced a long delay in the start of the second game.
That delay didn't do anything to hurt the Patriots bats, as they controlled the contest from the jump while
Cera Blanchard threw a gem from the circle.
The Patriots struck first, as
Bailey Krolczyk scored on an RBI single from
Sam Schott. That would give Blanchard the early lead to work with, and she was nothing short of impressive on Sunday.
Blanchard worked around a single in the first with a flyout, groundout, and a strikeout to end the frame. She went 1-2-3 in the second, striking out a pair of Mustangs as the Patriots continued to hold the lead.
The Patriots offense added three more runs in the third, as
Abbie Behe drove home a pair of runs on an RBI single and
Taryn Barney drove home another with an RBI single of her own to make it 4-0.
After another quick Blanchard inning, the Patriots added their fifth run in the fourth inning as
Ka'Lyn Watson drove home Smith on an RBI groundout. Smith would add an RBI of her own in the fifth, this time tripling to deep left field to bring home
Hailey Fannin.
Blanchard would face just one batter over the minimum in the fourth, fifth, and sixth, also adding another strikeout to her total.
In the seventh, the Patriots offense added one final run, as
Keona Wells came around to score from second on an errant throw to make it 7-0.
In the home half, the Mustangs would get a double and a single around a popout to put runners on the corners, and they worked a walk to load the bases. Blanchard would settle down, striking out the final two hitters of the game and picking up the complete game shutout.
JT Smith and
Taryn Barney put together 3-for-4 efforts while each driving home a run.
Abbie Behe drove home a pair, and seven different Patriots recorded a run.
#1 UT Tyler will now return home to Irwin Field for eight straight home games over the next two weekends. Those begin with a March 7
th doubleheader against Eastern New Mexico.
