SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – #33 UT Tyler women's tennis is now 2-0 to start LSC play after a 5-2 thrilling win over #18 Angelo State on the road on Saturday afternoon.
The Patriots knocked off their second straight ranked opponent after a 7-0 win over #49 Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday.
The Patriots got things going early in the match, taking both #1 and #2 doubles to take a 1-0 lead.
Yona Bancarel and
Natalia Gorzny were nearly perfect, earning a 6-1 win.
Carla Rodier and
Allison Schwartz followed, earning a 6-4 win in a set they never trailed in to move the Patriots in front.
In singles, the Patriots kept that fire going, as
Natalia Gorzny earned a 6-3, 7-5 straight sets win in her match to put the Patriots ahead 2-0 and knocking on the door of a win. She was followed by
Paula Castellanos, who split her first two sets 6-3, 3-6 before earning a 6-2 third set win to put the Patriots up 3-0.
The Rambelles would ultimately get on the board in the #6 line after a three set battle, but the Patriots would get the point necessary for the win in line #5.
Allison Schwartz dropped the first set 2-6, but she would never trail in the match again on her way to set wins of 6-4 and 6-2 to give the Patriots a 4-1 win.
The Rambelles got one last win in the #3 line, but Bancarel would add the final Patriots point in line #1 to cap off the win. She battled back to take the first set 7-5, but the Rambelles responded with a 6-7 (7-9) win. That set up a deciding tiebreaker, and Bancarel earned a 10-7 win in that tiebreaker to put the point on the board.
The Patriots now will set their sights on Western New Mexico and Sul Ross State as both teams come to Tyler next weekend. That action begins April 4
th at 10 a.m. against the Mustangs.
