TYLER, TEXAS – The #3/4/7 UT Tyler baseball team suffered their second straight series-opening loss on Friday night, falling 4-3 to West Texas A&M at Irwin Field. This marked the first time all season the Patriots have lost the opening game of a series at home.
Both starting pitchers dominated early, retiring the side in the first inning. The Buffs led off the second with a single, but UT Tyler quickly shut down the threat. The Patriots had a chance to strike first in the bottom half after back-to-back walks and a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position. However, West Texas A&M escaped the jam unscathed.
The Buffs finally broke through in the fourth inning. After two quick outs, they strung together a single, a walk, an RBI single, and a two-run double to take a 3-0 lead. They added another run in the fifth, capitalizing on a single, a throwing error, and a wild pitch to extend their advantage to 4-0.
UT Tyler responded in the bottom of the fifth when Tanner Hornback led off with a single, followed by Kyle Atkinson crushing his fourth home run of the season to deep center field, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
Out of the bullpen, Kolby Parker was outstanding, keeping the Buffs' offense in check. He tossed three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three. Nick Niebur took over in the eighth and continued the shutdown effort, pitching two scoreless frames with only one hit allowed.
The Patriots nearly completed the comeback in the ninth. Hornback led off with a double, and Atkinson followed with a single, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Mason Hammonds then delivered a sacrifice fly to bring UT Tyler within one. However, West Texas A&M held on to secure the 4-3 victory.
Despite the loss, UT Tyler's bullpen was dominant, with Parker and Niebur combining for five scoreless innings and just two hits allowed. Parker now holds a 2.57 ERA over seven innings pitched this season, while Niebur has a 2.89 ERA across 9.1 innings.
Offensively, Hammonds, Hornback, and Atkinson each had two hits. Hornback finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Atkinson, also 2-for-4, launched a two-run homer, raising his season batting average to .375 with 16 RBIs.
The loss drops UT Tyler to 17-4 on the season and in conference play. The Patriots will aim to bounce back in Saturday's doubleheader, starting at 2 p.m., as they look to reclaim the series lead heading into Sunday.
