WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS – UT Tyler tennis enjoyed a sweep of UAFS on Friday as the #22 ranked women won 7-0 and the #5 ranked men won 6-1.
The #22 Patriots women would get things going quickly in doubles, as
Natalia Gorzny and
Paula Castellanos combined for a 6-1 win. They were followed by two more wins in the #1 and #3 lines as the Patriots swept the doubles matches to lead 1-0.
Over in singles, Gornzy kept up her blistering pace as she knocked down a 6-2, 6-0 straight sets win in less than an hour.
That win would spark a Patriots avalanche in singles as they earned all six points to pick up a 7-0 sweep.
Elisa Buhagiar would earn a 6-2, 6-1 win in line #6,
Paula Castellanos earned a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win in line #3, and
Luisa Moraes went for a 6-3, 6-4 straight sets win in line #5.
Those four wins for the Patriots quickly set them up 5-0, with the #1 and #4 lines still in progress. Kanika Sivaramn stood in that #4 line and pulled off a roaring comeback after dropping the first set 3-6. She would respond with wins of 6-3, 6-3 to book yet another win.
The final Patriots win came in the #1 line, as
Carla Rodier split her first two sets 6-4, 4-6, before earning a 6-2 win to close out her match.
#5 Patriots men's tennis would equal the early efforts of the women, earning a sweep of the doubles matches, led by
Job Japelj and
Arthur Miquelard in line #3 as they took a 6-3 win.
In singles, the Patriots kept up the pressure as
Malo Poulesquen dropped just one game on his way to a 6-0, 6-1 straight sets win in line #6.
Martin Despodov would also dispatch his opponent in less than an hour, going for a 6-1, 6-1 win in line #3.
Daniil Felker joined the winning party in the #4 line, earning a 6-0, 7-6 (8-6) dramatic win.
Jordi Garcia Portell would add another straight sets win in line #5 with scores of 6-4, 6-4, moving the Patriots ahead 5-0.
The final point of the day came in the #2 line, as
Artiom Dorofeev battled closely throughout. He would take a 6-3 opening set, but his opponent matched with a 6-7 (4-7) win. That set up a deciding third set, and he picked up a 6-3 win to earn the sixth point on their way to a 6-1 win.
Both Patriots programs are now set to faceoff with Northwest Missouri State on Saturday afternoon in their second of three matches this weekend.
