TYLER, TEXAS - #3 UT Tyler softball delivered a doubleheader sweep on Friday over St. Edward's behind a balanced effort that saw the pitching and hitting come together in a dominant day.
GAME ONE: #3 UT Tyler: 8, St. Edward's: 0
Game one of the day saw a run-rule win that saw the Patriots score four runs in the first and then one final run in the fifth to ensure the win as
Kaylee Davis threw a complete game gem in the circle.
Davis was lights out, allowing just two hits while striking out a pair on the way to a complete game shutout win to move to 11-0 on the year.
She worked 1-2-3 innings in each of the first two frames and got the first out of the third inning before a single and two straight errors gave the Hilltoppers bases loaded with one out. Davis responded with a strikeout and a flyout to right to end the threat and ensure a blank number yet again.
In the fourth, she worked another scoreless frame, adding another strikeout and two flyouts around an error. In the fifth inning, she would get a trio of groundouts around just the second single of the day for the Hilltoppers to wrap up her day with a fifth straight zero on the board.
The Patriots offense wasted no time in getting going, as
JT Smith tripled to left center and the Patriots followed with a hit by pitch and a walk to load the bases.
Ka'Lyn Watson drilled a double to center to plate two, and
Miia Campos struck a sacrifice fly to right field to plate a third run. The final run would come two batters later, as
Abbie Behe doubled off the left field wall to make it 4-0.
The Patriots would go scoreless in the second and third, but then found their offensive stride again in the fourth with a two out rally.
Bailey Krolczyk doubled to right center to drive home one, and Watson drove home Krolczyk just one batter later. Campos was next up at the plate, and she came up big again with another RBI single.
With a 7-0 lead in the fifth, the Patriots just needed one run to enable the run-rule win. After a fielder's choice led to two outs, Smith would steal second and then move up to third on an error, and
Sam Schott played the role of hero, singling up the middle to give the Patriots the 8-0 win.
Campos and Watson combined to go 4-for-5 with five RBI and one run scored.
Jordyn De Los Santos and Schott each added two hits, while Krolczyk, Smith, and Schott each scored two runs.
GAME TWO: #3 UT Tyler: 8, St. Edward's: 1
Game two would see more success than game one from the Hilltoppers offense, but five runs from the Patriots in the sixth inning put the game out of reach.
Miia Campos continued her huge day with an RBI single in the first inning, putting the Patriots up 1-0. That gave starter
Cera Blanchard all the room she needed, as she struck out three of the first four batters of the game and worked out of a basess loaded jam in the second to kept the Patriots in front.
She would work around a leadoff walk in the third with a sacrifice bunt, popup, and a strikeout. In the fourth, she struck out another pair of Hilltoppers after a lineout as the Patriots stayed in front.
In the fourth,
Ka'Lyn Watson slugged a solo home run with one out to left field to double the Patriots lead. Four batters later,
Sam Garcia entered the game as a pinch hitter and connected on a clutch two out single that plated De Los Santos to make it 3-0 after four.
In the sixth, the Hilltoppers would scratch their first run of the doubleheader, taking advantage of a one out double and a throwing error to cut the lead down to two. That would chase Blanchard from the game, and
Primrose Aholelei took over.
Aholelei would strikeout two of the three batters she faced in the sixth inning, effectively ending the Hilltoppers rally. That seemed to give the Patriots bats a big spark, and they scored five runs in the home half to make it 8-1.
Angelique Rangel led off the scoring with a squeeze bunt that brought home De Los Santos, and the Patriots would later pull off a double steal that allowed
Megan Geyer to steal home.
Schott tripled to right center field to bring home another run, and then Bailey Krolcyzk hit a laser home run to right field that just cleared the wall to add another two runs to the tally.
In the top of the seventh, Aholelei would strike out the first two batters she saw, and then got a flyout to left field to end the game.
Cera Blanchard moved to 15-3 on the year after going 5.1 innings and allowing five hits and one unearned run. She struck out six and walked two.
Primrose Aholelei picked up her fourth save of the year, going 1.2 innings while striking out four and walking just one.
Watson, De Los Santos, and Behe each recorded two hits as they each combined to go 6-for-8 with three runs scored and one RBI. Krolczyk would add two RBI as six different players recorded an RBI in the contest.
#3 UT Tyler will next welcome St. Mary's for a doubleheader on Sunday at Irwin Field. That doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
