EDMOND, OKLAHOMA – The UT Tyler Baseball program completed a dominant series sweep on Friday afternoon with a 13-1 run-rule victory. The Patriots scored in every inning, propelled by a historic performance from
Connor Clark, while the pitching staff held Oklahoma Christian to just five hits in the series finale.
Clark started his remarkable day with a leadoff triple and came around to score on a
Drew Schmidt sacrifice fly. A single followed, and he was driven in by a double from Bruce Jewell making it 2-0.
Kyle Froehlich then took the mound for the Patriots, retiring the side in order in the first inning with two strikeouts.
In the second inning,
Tanner Hornback led off with a triple and eventually scored on an error. A batter later, Clark hit a solo home run down the right field line, extending the lead to 4-0. Froehlich returned to the mound and once again set the side down in order.
The Patriots continued their offensive onslaught in the third inning. A single and stolen base by Jewell set up a
Blake LaBuda double, scoring Jewell and making it 5-0. Clark followed with a single to keep the offense rolling.
In the fourth inning, Clark's historic day continued as he singled to lead off the inning.
Justin Williams doubled to bring Clark home, and Schmidt followed with a single, advancing Williams to third.
Ethan Menard then drove in Williams with an RBI groundout, pushing the lead to 7-0. They would go on to add another run in the fifth when a free pass scored on a
Mason Hammonds single.
The Eagles got on the board in the fifth after a hit-by-pitch and an error set the stage for a single that made it 8-1. However, the Patriots quickly responded in the sixth with a three-run inning. Clark led off with a double, completing the cycle and cementing his historic day. After a walk, Schmidt singled to score one run, and Jewell followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in another. A passed ball allowed the third run of the inning to score, extending the lead to 11-1.
UT Tyler added more insurance runs in the seventh. A single and double set up
Kyle Atkinson's sacrifice fly to plate a run. Schmidt capped off the game with an RBI single, scoring the final run and securing the series sweep at 13-1.
Froehlich did more than enough in the run-rule victory to improve his perfect record to 7-0. He tossed four strong innings, allowing just two hits, striking out four, and surrendering no runs.
Kolby Parker and
Nash Villegas closed out the game, combining for three innings of relief. Together, they allowed just three hits, struck out three, and gave up no earned runs.
Offensively, five different Patriots recorded multi-hit performances in the finale. The duo of
Drew Schmidt and
Connor Clark led the way, combining for a perfect 7-for-7 day at the plate. Schmidt wrapped up his series with a 3-for-3 outing and three RBIs, while Clark made program history by hitting for the cycle. He went 4-for-4, scored four runs, and drove in one.
The Patriots continued their offensive explosion throughout the series, scoring 13 or more runs in three of the four games. The sweep extended their winning streak to 10 games, and with a 37-9 overall record, UT Tyler heads into their final Lone Star Conference regular season series with momentum. They'll return home to take on St. Mary's to close out regular season play.
