ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FLORIDA – #3 seed UT Tyler men's tennis will move into the Elite Eight for the second straight season and second time in the NCAA era of the program after a dominant 4-0 win over Edinboro on Tuesday afternoon.
The Patriots didn't drop a point to the Scots on the day and only dropped two sets in two unfinished matches on their way to the big win.
In doubles, the Patriots leaned on their #2 and #3 lines as they each earned wins. The #2 line of
Artiom Dorofeev and
Malo Poulesquen rolled to a 6-2 win, and the #3 line of
Job Japelj and
Trevor Short earned a 7-5 win to put the Patriots up 1-0.
Over in singles, Poulesquen kept up his dominant day as he earned a 6-3, 6-2 straight sets win in the #5 line. He would be followed by
Jordi Garcia Portell, who earned a 6-2, 6-2 straight sets win of his own in the #6 line to put the Patriots ahead 3-0 and onto match point.
That match point would quickly follow, as
Martin Despodov rolled in the #3 line to a 6-2, 6-1 win to put the fourth and final point on the board and earn a 4-0 win.
UT Tyler will now square off with #6 seed Azusa Pacific in the Elite Eight. That match is scheduled for Wednesday at 2 p.m. central time back at Sanlando Park.
