Whataburger Week Five Preview: Volleyball

The Patriots got off to a blistering start in LSC play and will look to follow that up this week with one game on the road and one at home.

LAST TIME OUT
 
Last week the Patriots faced off with Cameron and Oklahoma Christian on Friday and Saturday to open up their Lone Star Conference slate. The Patriots were on fire, taking a pair of 3-0 sweeps to start their LSC slate 2-0.
 
UT Tyler hit .293 against Cameron while Kota Hartman and Autumn Perry each went for double digit kills and Saige Rivera dished out 32 assists. Against the Eagles, the Patriots went even further, hitting .364 as seven different players recorded a kill and Rivera added 31 assists.
 
THE LSC STANDINGS
 
UT Tyler was one of five teams to go undefeated over the opening week, and Texas A&M-Kingsville is the lone team at 3-0 so far. Midwestern State, Lubbock Christian, and Angelo State join the Patriots at 2-0.
 
THE HILLTOPPERS
 
The first match of the week will see the Patriots hit the road on Tuesday to take on St. Edward's. The Hilltoppers stand at 3-4 on the year and 0-2 in LSC play. They started their LSC slate with two 3-1 defeats to UT Permian Basin and Angelo State.
 
They are led on offense by Kelli Fording and Addy Badley, who have 77 and 68 kills each. Fording also leads the way with 23 service aces on the year for the team. Althea Morris serves as the team's setter, picking up 208 assists so far.
 
As a team the Hilltoppers are hitting .178 while averaging 11.7 kills, 10.7 assists, and 13.2 digs per set.
 
THE COMETS
 
UT Dallas is 3-9 on the year and 1-1 in LSC play after recording a 3-2 win over Cameron on Saturday for their first ever LSC victory. Their loss was a 3-0 defeat to Oklahoma Christian.
 
As a team the Comets are hitting .158 on the season while posting 11.2 kills, 10.4 assists, and 16.4 digs per set. Individually, Jane Burkhardt and Moriah Johnson have 125 and 116 kills each. Abby Genter and Sydney Sabin have posted 153 and 201 assists each, while Mari Hernandez leads the team at 208 total digs.
 
PATRIOTS NEWS AND NOTES
 
  • UT Tyler went 18-9 overall in 2024 with a 14-2 record in the LSC. They qualified for their 4th straight NCAA South Central Regional Tournament and finished 3rd in the LSC Standings.
  • The Patriots are led by head coach Lyndsay Mashe who is in her 10th season with the program and 20th year as a head coach. She is 169-77 (.687) with the Patriots and 363-199 (.646) overall.
  • Coach Mashe is joined by her husband and Associate Head Coach Kris Mashe, who has been at her side throughout all 20 years of her tenure.
  • UT Tyler will return their three highest offensive players in terms of kills from 2024 as Kota Hartman, Autumn Perry, and Jackie Velzis come back. Hartman, the reigning LSC Newcomer of the Year, had 399 kills and hit .216 to average 3.87 kills per set.
  • Saige Rivera, the Preseason LSC Setter of the Year, will look to build on a season that saw her total 995 assists for an average of 9.85 per set. She also had a strong year at the service line, picking up 24 aces to post the third most on the team.
  • Of the 10 players that played at least 70 sets last season, seven will make their return in one of the strongest returning classes in recent seasons.
  • As a team the Patriots are 6-6 in 2025 and are 2-0 in LSC play. They are hitting .211 and holding opponents to .181 while posting 12.2 assists per set, 13.0 kills per set, and 16.4 digs per set.
  • Autumn Perry leads the Patriots with 140 kills and Audrey Brandon has a .466 attack percentage to lead the team with those over 20 kills. Saige Rivera has 300 assists thus far, and Anna Arceneaux has 143 total digs.
