WASHBURN, KAN. – The UT Tyler track & field teams turned in a series of strong performances at the Washburn Open on Saturday, posting podium finishes, top-10 marks, and a pentathlon victory against a deep regional and national field.
On the women's side, Juliane Frueh stole the spotlight by capturing the pentathlon title. Frueh finished first in the 800 meters (2:19.69) and placed top-three in the high jump (1.64m), 60-meter hurdles (9.29), and shot put (11.92m). Teammate Zakaiya Hunte also contributed with third-place finishes in the 60-meter hurdles (9.29) and high jump (1.61m), while Kaylee Monthie added a podium performance in the pentathlon 800 meters, taking third (2:26.27). In individual track events, Aerin Thompson dominated the 400 meters, crossing first in 55.32 seconds. Macy Cogburn placed seventh in the 800 meters (2:15.05), and Nina Allmark finished tenth (2:16.40).
The men's squad turned in several notable efforts, highlighted by Brandon Arenas' qualification to the 60-meter hurdles finals, where he finished sixth (8.06). Jakai Timmons posted a solid 16th-place finish in the 400 meters (47.95), and Chris Kopecky ran 1:53.95 in the 800 meters. The men's 4x400 relay team crossed sixth in 3:14.74. In field events, Robert Myers placed fifth in the shot put (16.30m), with Kaden Adams taking 13th (15.04m).
In Boston, Massachusetts, David Soto competed at the Boston Terrier Classic and shattered the school record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 13:58.29, earning an NCAA qualifying mark in the process.
Overall, the Patriots showcased depth and versatility across the track and field events, highlighted by Frueh's pentathlon triumph and multiple top-3 finishes.The Patriots track & field program will return to action in two weeks as the indoor season continues at the Gorilla Classic.
