#7 Patriots Fall to #4 Argonauts in ITA Indoor Opener

The #6 seed Patriots battled tough with #3 seed West Florida on Friday but came up just short in their opening matchup at the ITA Indoor National Championships.

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA – #7 ranked and #6 seed UT Tyler men's tennis fell by a score of 4-1 to #4 ranked and #3 seed West Florida at the ITA Indoor National Championships on Friday.

The Argonauts attacked quickly, taking a 6-3 win and a 6-1 win in the #2 and #1 doubles lines to take a 1-0 lead into singles. Job Japelj and Trevor Short were leading 5-4 in the #3 line, but the match was abandoned due to the two wins.

The Patriots got their own point on the board with a big win from Samuel Antwi in the #4 line, who battled back from a 5-7 decision in his first set with scores of 6-2, 6-0 to even the match.

The Argonauts took the lead back with a straight sets win in the #2 line, moving them one step closer to the win.

Carel Wessel in the #3 line dropped his opening set 2-6, but came right back with a 6-4 win to even the match up at one set each. The third set would fall the way of the Argonauts in a score of 3-6.

The final point would come in the #1 line, where Malo Poulesquen was locked in a heated battle. He took a marathon first set 7-6 (8-6), but dropped a narrow second at 4-6. That set up a third and final set, where he again battled late but fell 5-7 as the Argonauts took the match 4-1.

With the loss, UT Tyler moves into the consolation bracket of the event and will take on #7 seed Azusa Pacific at 9 a.m. central time.
