TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler softball moved to 36-8 overall and 28-4 in LSC play on Friday afternoon after sweeping Cameron for their 14
th doubleheader sweep of the season.
GAME ONE: #22 UT Tyler 6 | Cameron 3
Cameron struck first on starter
Alli Kimball, plating a run on a sacrifice fly to open up the game with a 1-0 lead. Kimball responded with a scoreless second behind a groundout, popout, and strikeout, The Aggies again pressed in the third, getting a solo homer on the second batter of the inning, ultimately running Kimball from the game.
She made room for
Kearston Gooch, who came on and shut down the inning with a groundout and a strikeout to limit the damage.
In the bottom of the third, the Patriots offense came alive. A leadoff walk brought up
Dezirae Lopez, who drilled a full count homer over the center field wall to make it 2-2. A walk and a hit by pitch put two on, and
Sydney Linn drove home another with a grounder to short that forced an error. The next batter was
Kaelyn Lerma, who added to the tally with an RBI single to left center to make it 4-2 and run the Aggies starter from the game.
The Patriots continued to pour it on, getting another RBI from
Kaylee Cavazos on another error, and another RBI from Kiera Wiedenhaupt on a fielder's choice to make it 6-2 after three.
Gooch worked around two singles and a walk in the fourth, putting up a big zero to keep the Patriots out in front. In the fifth, she kept up the heat, working around a leadoff error with a strikeout, groundout, and lineout to end the frame.
In the sixth, Gooch got a leadoff flyout followed by a single, and then ended the frame with a strikeout and groundout. In the seventh with the Patriots staying out in the front, Gooch came back out to finish off the game. A walk and a hit by pitch followed a leadoff groundout, and another groundout moved the runners up into scoring position. An infield single would plate a run to cut it to 6-3, but Gooch officially put a bow on the game with a groundout from the next batter.
Dezirae Lopez went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run, and
Megan Lau added a 2-for-2 effort.
Kearston Gooch earned her 12
th win of the year after going 4.2 innings with five hits, one run, and three strikeouts.
GAME TWO: #22 UT Tyler 8 | Cameron 4
Kendall Selitzky got the ball to start game two, and she worked around two walks in the first to post a scoreless inning, and added another in the second around a single with two groundouts and a foulout.
The Aggies were first on the board again, getting a three run blast in the third inning after a single and a walk to take a 3-0 lead. The Patriots offense again had the big answers though in the home half, exploding for six runs to take the lead.
Three singles loaded the bases, and a two RBI double from Linn opened up their scoring. The next batter was Lerma, and she drove home two more with a single up the middle to give the Patriots the lead. An RBI double from Cavazos and a sacrifice fly from
Trinity Hale put a six up on the scoreboard and made it 6-3 after three.
After a leadoff homer from the Aggies in the fourth,
Addison Martindale would come on in relief. She would get a groundout, but then walked three straight and was pulled for Gooch yet again. She worked out of the big jam with a flyout and a groundout, ending the frame with just the one run of damage and a 6-4 lead for UT Tyler.
Gooch allowed a leadoff single to begin the fifth, but wiped it away with a perfect ground ball double play. She tacked on a groundout back to herself and ended the frame. In the sixth it was more of the same as she got a groundout, fielder's choice, and a flyout around a walk.
In the home half of the sixth, the Patriots added two big insurance runs to put the game out of reach. A single and a double put two into scoring position, and
Taryn Barney drove them both home with a single to center to make it 8-4.
Gooch would trot out to the circle for the final frame, and she got three groundouts back to herself around a one out single to end the game.
Layne Reh,
Laci Berecochea, Barney, and Lerma each had at least two hits, and Barney, Linn, and Lerma each had two RBI.
Gooch would pick up her second win of the day and 13
th of the year, going 3.2 innings in relief with three hits and no runs.
#22 UT Tyler will now set their eyes on a doubleheader with #15 Oklahoma Christian on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. right back at Irwin Field.
