ROCKWALL, TEXAS – UT Tyler men's golf will take the number one seed into the medal match play portion of the Lone Star Conference Championship after finishing as the top team over the first 54 holes on Tuesday.
The Patriots fired a final round 293, the lowest score of the day by three shots and one of just three rounds to break 300 in the field. They will be joined in medal match play by Cameron, West Texas A&M, and Midwestern State, and they will face off with the #4 seeded Mustangs in the semifinal round on Wednesday morning.
Blake Harwell led the Patriots with one of the top rounds in the tournament on Tuesday, shooting a final round 71. He opened with three birdies in his first six holes and then made just one double bogey coming home. That round was tied for the lowest of the day in the field on Tuesday and helped him climb nine spots to a tie for eighth.
Backing up that strong performance was the trio of
Corbin Murray,
Preston DeSerrano, and
Jacob Holloway, shooting 73, 74, and 75, respectively. Murray climbed 20 spots on the individual leaderboard with his round, making one birdie and 15 pars in his round. DeSerrano climbed 12 spots and played his final eight holes in one under par. Holloway finished as the high Patriot on the leaderboard, placing sixth after his final round 75 that included two birdies.
All five Patriot players finished inside the top 20 overall, making them the only team in the field to accomplish the feat.
UT Tyler will face off with Midwestern State on Wednesday in the semifinal round of match play, with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. on hole one. The match will be played in stroke play format, with each match worth one point. The team with the most points after the five matches will move into the final round tomorrow afternoon against the winner between #2 seed Cameron and #3 seed West Texas A&M.
