Bahia Principe, Mexico, Sept. 27, 2026 – The UT Tyler men's golf program opened play at the 2026 DII Shootout at Tulum Country Club with a strong showing on Sunday, shooting a team score of +15 (303) to sit third after the first round at PGA Riviera Maya.
UT Tyler trails only Colorado Mesa +1 (289) and UT Permian Basin +6 (294) entering Monday's second round.
The Patriots were led by a pair of sophomores who finished with strong opening rounds from
Blake Harwell and
Preston Chabaud. Harwell carded an even-par (72) to finish day one tied for third individually, just one shot off of the tournament lead. Chabaud ended the opening round with a top five appearance on the leaderboard after shooting a one-over-par (73).
Preston DeSerrano rounded out his day with a score of a +4 (76), placing him in a tie for 17th after 18 holes.
Braden Bergman finished his opening round with a score of +10 (82) and sits tied for 40th, while
Corbin Murray wrapped up his round shooting +11 (83) and is tied for 44th.
Harwell's opening round of 72 was one of only four rounds of even par or better in the field and give him a good chance to secure a top spot entering day two.
UT Tyler posted the tournament's second-lowest scoring average on Par 3 holes and ranked fourth in the field with 12 birdies. Individually, Chabaud and Harwell tied for the third best Par 3 scoring average, while Chabaud also tied for third overall in birdies with four.
The Patriots will kick off Round two of the tournament at 9 :40 a.m. Monday at PGA Riviera Maya as they look to continue their strong play and position themselves to make a push in the final round on Tuesday.
