With a Master's degree in Counseling, Education, and Sport Psychology from the University of Missouri and a Bachelor's degree in Health Studies from Texas Southern University, Derek has a solid educational foundation to support his career in the sports industry.
Derek's professional journey includes roles such as Assistant Director of Sports Performance and Director of Nutrition and Student Life Wellness at New Mexico State University. Before this role, Derek was a Coaching Assistant for Sports Performance at the same institution.
His experience includes positions as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Missouri Athletic Performance and the University of Houston. Derek's Deer Park High School internship also provided him with hands-on experience working with high school student-athletes.
Other responsibilities gained through his experiences include managing the operating budgets, designing specific sports teams programs, spearheaded scout report for NFL Combine scouts for Pro Day, and collaborating closely with the Sports Medicine staff to prevent and rehabilitate injuries. He is also responsible for overseeing the nutrition program, coordinating training tables for athletes, and managing pre-game and post-game fueling strategies.
Derek's commitment to professional development is evident through his certifications, including being a Registered Strength and Conditioning Certified professional, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, and a Titleist Performance Institute Certified individual. His proficiencies in various tools and technologies include GPS monitoring, data collecting, and Velocity-Based Training.
