TYLER, Texas – UT Tyler gave a spirited second-half effort against NCAA Division II's No. 11-ranked DBU Thursday night, but the Patriots were unable to put any of its six shots in the back of the net in a 3-0 defeat to the Lone Star Conference leaders.
Â
DBU got first-half goals from Delaney Schmidt and Taylor Gurnett, and Jayme Woodfill added an insurance goal in the final minute of an otherwise even second half to provide the final 3-0 margin.
Â
With the loss, UT Tyler falls to 3-7 overall and 1-5 in Lone Star Conference play, while DBU retains the conference lead after improving to 10-0-1 overall and 7-0 in the LSC.
Â
How It Happened: UT Tyler spent most of the first half defending its own half of the field, and the Patriots kept DBU off the scoreboard until the 26
th minute when DBU forwards Kaci Parks and Delaney Schmidt teamed up to take advantage of a change in possession deep in UT Tyler territory. Parks quickly centered the ball to the top of the box for Schmidt, who curled a shot just inside the upper right corner of the goal for the first score of the game.
Â
In the 41
st minute, DBU won possession on a UT Tyler goal kick and that possession in UT Tyler territory quickly developed into another scoring opportunity. As Kenzie Spodnik pushed the ball forward towards the center of the box, she played it to the right for Taylor Gurnett, who placed a shot inside the far post to give DBU a 2-0 lead.
Â
DBU generated a 14-0 advantage in shots in the first half, but the second-half shots margin was much tighter, as DBU edge UT Tyler in shots after halftime, 8-6. Â The Patriots took the first four shots of the second half, and in the 81
st minute, a DBU clearance landed at the feet of
Landri Edwards. She lined up a quick shot from 40 yards out, and it would have found the net just underneath the crossbar if not for a perfectly-timed save from DBU goalkeeper Hope Koym to punch the ball over the goal for a UT Tyler corner kick.
Â
With just under a minute left in the game, DBU scored its final goal when Sydney Jordan won a ball along the left sideline and crossed it in front of the net to Jayme Woodfill, who finished the chance from six yards out with a shot that deflected off a UT Tyler defender into the net.
Â
By The Numbers: DBU finished with a 22-6 edge in shots and 5-1 advantage in corner kicks… All six UT Tyler shots came from different players…
Camri Cecil made four of her five saves in the first half to help keep UT Tyler within two goals at halftime.
