Patriots Push Pioneers To Double Overtime

UT Tyler held a late 2-1 lead, but Texas Woman’s University tied the game with seven minutes left in regulation and left with a 3-2 double-overtime win over the Patriots

TYLER, Texas – UT Tyler was less than 10 minutes away from pulling off its most impressive victory of the Patriots' brief Lone Star Conference membership, but Texas Woman's University equalized the game with seven minutes left in regulation before converting a corner kick for a golden goal in double-overtime to escape East Texas with a 3-2 victory over Division II newcomer UT Tyler.

Kaycee West and Shaylee Anaya scored the UT Tyler goals, with West scoring on a first-half free kick first touched by Landri Edwards before Anaya scored midway through the second half with an assist from Taylor Dickens to give the Patriots a 2-1 lead in the 77th minute.

However, TWU avoided its second Lone Star blemish by answering in the 84th minute with a Lexi D'Abrosca goal to tie the game and force overtime. In the 105th minute, Maddy Harper finished a Jazmine Navarro corner kick at the back post for the game-winner.

With the loss, UT Tyler falls to 3-8 overall and 1-6 in Lone Star Conference play, while Texas Woman's University improves to 11-2 overall and 7-1 in the LSC.

How It Happened: Abigail Martinez delivered an early lead for Texas Woman's, scoring midway through the first half with an assist from Maddi Nolton. However, just 12 minutes later, a TWU foul just outside its own penalty box gave UT Tyler a dangerous scoring opportunity on a free kick. Landri Edwards provided the first touch as she ran over the ball, and Kaycee West delivered the finish into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.

The Patriots took a 2-1 lead when Taylor Dickens led Shaylee Anaya into an advantageous attacking position, where Anaya beat the goalkeeper for her first goal of the season in the 77th minute. The lead lasted just over six minutes, until D'Abrosca delivered a shot off the left post and into the goal to tie the game at 2-2 in the 84th minute.

Texas Woman's generated all six shots of overtime, and the last one was Maddy Harper's game-winning finish at the back post of Jazmine Navarro's corner kick in the 105th minute to end the game.

By The Numbers: Texas Woman's University finished with a 25-15 advantage in total shots and a 2-0 edge in corner kicks… Shaylee Anaya took a team-high four shots, and Kaycee West added three shots for the Patriots, who finished with their highest team shot total (15) since producing 17 shots in the Lone Star Conference opener against UT Permian Basin… Dickens and Edwards each collected their second assists of the season to set up UT Tyler's two scores… Camri Cecil finished with six saves, and she has registered at least four saves in 10 consecutive games.

What's Next: UT Tyler is on the road for four of its final six games of the 2019 campaign, starting with road games next week at St. Edward's (Oct. 24) and Angelo State (Oct. 26).
