Lightning Brings 2-0 Defeat To Early End

UT Tyler fell behind by two goals to LSC-unbeaten St. Edward's before lightning in the area brought the game to an early conclusion

AUSTIN, Texas – Lightning strikes in the vicinity of the St. Edward's University campus in Austin brought an early conclusion to UT Tyler's 2-0 defeat to the Hilltoppers, who remained unbeaten in Lone Star Conference play through nine games with Thursday night's weather-shortened win.

The Patriots' defense spent most of the first half fighting off a persistent St. Edward's attack, and UT Tyler nearly took the game into halftime scoreless until the Hilltoppers scored with less than two minutes left in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.  They added an insurance goal just over 11 minutes into the second half for a 2-0 lead, and the game was halted with 14:38 remaining for a lightning delay.  The thunderstorms in the area did not clear in time for the teams to resume the game, bringing the game to its early conclusion.

With the defeat, UT Tyler falls to 3-9 overall and 1-7 in Lone Star Conference play, while St. Edward's improves to 9-4-1 overall and 8-0-1 in the LSC.

How It Happened: UT Tyler held St. Edward's scoreless for nearly the entire first half, but the Hilltoppers broke through with less than two minutes remaining in the half when Georgia Fogarty put away a rebound of a Reagan Dykes shot which deflected off a Patriot defender for the first goal of the game.  The HIlltoppers kept the pressure on in the second half, adding a 57th-minute goal from Sarah Gunderson, who headed a cross from Jenna Lipscomb into the back of the net.

The game was initially suspended for lightning strikes within the vicinity of the St. Edward's campus just past the 75-minute mark, and when thunderstorms continued to track throughout the area, the game was eventually called.  Since the game went over 70 minutes, it is considered an official game.

By The Numbers: St. Edward's generated a 12-1 advantage in shots, limiting UT Tyler to a single second-half shot from Gabi Garcia... The Hilltoppers registered a 6-0 edge in corner kicks... UT Tyler's attack was whistled offside twice... Both goalkeepers made one save each, as Patriot junior Maya Dossing made her first start of the season in goal.

What's Next: UT Tyler's past three LSC opponents own a combined 23-1-1 record in conference play, and the daunting stretch continues Saturday with a 1 p.m. visit to Angelo State, which currently sits in fourth in the conference standings at 10-2-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the Lone Star Conference.
