LUBBOCK, Texas – Birkir Eydal scored goals in each half to give UT Tyler a 2-1 lead midway through the second half, but Lubbock Christian pulled even less than two minutes later and scored in double-overtime to post a 3-2 win over the visiting Patriots Friday afternoon.
Eydal moved into a three-way tie for UT Tyler's individual scoring leader, joining Steven Chavez and Travis Collins with three goals each this season.
With the defeat, UT Tyler falls to 6-4-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the Lone Star Conference, while Lubbock Christian climbed into a tie for third in the LSC standings as the Chaparrals improved to 8-4-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the LSC.
How It Happened: Lubbock Christian got an early goal from Abdou Joof, who scored less than two minutes into the contest to give LCU a 1-0 lead. Eydal answered with his first goal less than four minutes later, scoring with an assist from Ramiro Alvarez to tie the game at 1-1 just 310 seconds into the contest.
Although the teams combined for another 11 first-half shots, the game went into halftime tied at 1-1. In the 69th minute, Eydal pushed the Patriots in front when he scored his second goal of the contest with an assist from Darío Rossell. The 2-1 lead lasted barely a minute for UT Tyler, as Caram Carneiro Alves tied the game in the 70th minute. Lubbock Christian took five more shots the rest of the half, and UT Tyler was whistled offsides twice in the final 10 minutes. Travis Collins put a shot on goal in the 88th minute, but his shot was saved by LCU goalkeeper Braxton Thorne.
Lubbock Christian created a pair of corner kicks in the first 10-minute overtime, but Richie Vaca-Cordova put the only shot in overtime into the net for the game-winning golden goal in the 106th minute.
By The Numbers: In a game with five combined goals, the game was tied for over 100 of the 105 minutes played… Lubbock Christian finished the game with an 18-14 edge in shots, and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks… Birkir Eydal took a game-high four shots, although four LCU players finished with three shots… The 106th-minute game-winner was the only shot taken by either team in over 15 minutes of overtime play..
