DALLAS – A close call in the opening set led to a three-set sweep for UT Tyler Friday evening at DBU, as the Patriots fell by a 27-25, 25-17, 25-22 margin.
Kyana Alvarez recorded double digit kills and digs for the fourth consecutive matchm, tallying team-highs of 10 kills and 20 digs to lead UT Tyler offensively and defensively.
With the loss, UT Tyler drops to 8-11 overall and 3-8 in Lone Star Conference play, while DBU improves to 13-10 overall and 5-6 in the LSC.
How It Happened: UT Tyler rallied from an 18-15 deficit late in the opening set, scoring five of the next six points to take a 20-19 lead, and Kylee Becker's sixth kill of the first set gave the Patriots set point at 24-23. However, DBU stayed alive with consecutive points and scored four out of five points for the 27-25 win.
In the second set, DBU took control early by scoring three straight points to take a 4-2 lead, and it led the rest of the way in a 25-17 win that gave DBU its second set victory. In the third set, UT Tyler jumped out to a 5-1 lead and didn't trail until late in the set, when DBU closed out the three-set sweep with four consecutive points to erase UT Tyler's 22-21 lead and finish the match.
By The Numbers: Both teams recorded 65 digs, but DBU won every other major team stat category, including kills (42-40), aces (6-2), and blocks (8-6)… DBU's .188 attack percentage was nearly identical to UT Tyler's .180 attack percentage in the match.
UT Tyler Stat Leaders: Five players finished between six and 10 kills, with all five players logging at least 14 attack attempts. Kyana Alvarez led the way with 10 kills and 20 digs, her fourth consecutive match with double figures in both categories. Over the past two weeks, Alvarez has posted a pair of 20-kill efforts and established and now tied her career-high in digs with 20. Maiya Peña finished with 8 kills and just 1 error in 14 attempts, and she added a pair of blocks. Hannah Callison and Kylee Becker added 7 kills each, and Savanna Sherman registered 37 assists and 7 digs in her first start of the season.
DBU Stat Leaders: Carly Earnest was DBU's kills leader, finishing with nine kills along with nine digs while four others finished between six and eight kills. Alyssa Pevehouse notched a match-high 21 digs, and Keely Hardin served four of DBU's six aces. Kasey Holand had a hand in a match-high four of DBU's eight team blocks.
What's Next: UT Tyler visits Tarleton on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 2:00 p.m., and the Patriots will return home next week for divisional matches against Cameron (Nov. 1) and UAFS (Nov. 2).
