STEPHENVILLE, Texas -- After battling back from a set down twice to force five sets in a Lone Star Conference road matchup at Tarleton, the UT Tyler volleyball team dropped the fifth set of the match to fall to 1-5 on the road in conference play with Saturday's 25-19, 25-27, 25-15, 19-25, 15-8 defeat.
Hannah Callison led a trio of Patriots with double-digit kills, recording 12 kills while the team posted 11 blocks in the five-set defeat.
With the defeat, UT Tyler drops to 8-12 overall and 3-9 in Lone Star Conference play, while Tarleton improves to 13-9 overall and 7-5 in the LSC.
How It Happened: Tarleton never trailed in a 25-19 opening-set win, but UT Tyler put together several impressive comebacks in the second set, tying up the set with a 27-25 win after erasing an 18-11 deficit and fighting off three consecutive set points facing a 24-21 hole. The Patriots went on a 9-1 run to tie the set at 19-19 behind the serve of Brianna Bellehumeur, who served two aces during the run while Maiya Peña had a kill and then back-to-back solo blocks that tied the set at 19-19. After Tarleton moved back in control to take a 24-21 lead, the Texans committed a setting error, which was followed by a Jayden Thompson block, and Peña kept the set alive with a service ace that tied it up at 24-24. Savanna Sherman served an ace between kills from Hannah Callison and Thompson to finish off the 27-25 win.
In the third set, neither team put together more than three consecutive points until Tarleton reeled off seven straight to turn an 18-15 lead into the 25-15 victory. A quick start for the Patriots in the third set resulted in an early 6-2 lead, and UT Tyler led by at least two points the rest of the set. Callison and Christina Escamilla recorded kills in a late 3-0 run to finish off the 25-19 win in the fourth set and tie the match at two sets apiece.
UT Tyler kept pace in the fifth set, taking a 2-1 lead and staying within a point as late as 6-5, which is when Tarleton pulled away with six consecutive points to take a 12-5 lead. After the Patriots responded with three points, cutting the lead to 12-8, Tarleton ended the match with three more points for the 15-8 win.
By The Numbers: UT Tyler scored 15 points on unforced Tarleton errors, as the Texans committed two service errors, five ball-handling errors, and eight blocking errors at the net… Tarleton held advantages in kills (60-52), digs (76-63), and aces (7-5) with UT Tyler posting an 11-8 advantage in team blocks… The Patriots are now 3-3 in five-set matches this season.
UT Tyler Stat Leaders: Hannah Callison recorded a team-high 12 kills, her fourth time in double figures in kills this year. Christina Escamilla and Maiya Peña added 11 kills each for the Patriots, and Peña was one of three players who registered at least 3 blocks for UT Tyler. Jayden Thompson finished with a team-high 4 blocks, and Kayla McCoy added 3 blocks in one set of action. Savannah Guzman notched a team-high 18 digs, and Savanna Sherman collected 41 assists to go with 7 digs.
Tarleton Stat Leaders: Amber Strange finished with a match-high 16 kills to lead the Texans, who excelled defensively with 76 digs as a team with four individuals reaching double figures in digs. Adriana Darthuy led the way with 20 digs, and she added a match-high 3 service aces.
What's Next: UT Tyler returns home next weekend for a pair of divisional matches in Lone Star Conference play, hosting Cameron on Friday, Nov. 1, and UAFS on Saturday, Nov. 2. After a pair of road matches the following weekend, UT Tyler wraps up the 2019 season with a two-match divisional rivalry set against A&M-Commerce, starting at home on Friday, Nov. 15 before the season-ending visit to Commerce on Saturday, Nov. 16.
