Patriots Finish Season With Points Of Progress

UT Tyler dropped its second straight three-set sweep at the hands of Texas A&M-Commerce, but the Patriots narrowed the gap in all three sets Saturday

COMMERCE, Texas -- UT Tyler gave Texas A&M-Commerce all it could handle as one of the Lone Star Conference's top volleyball title contenders picked up close wins in all three sets for a second straight sweep over the Patriots on Saturday.

The 25-23, 25-22, 25-20 defeat was eight points tighter than Friday night's opener between the teams, and just as it did the night before, UT Tyler led in all three sets before A&M-Commerce pulled away to win.

Neither team had a player in double figures in kills in the match, as Maiya Peña led the Patriots and Sydney Anderson led the Lions with eight kills each. Brianna Bellehumeur served a season-high 5 aces for UT Tyler, which claimed 10 points on service aces. On the other side of the net, Shelley Chapron registered 5 block assists, accounting for nearly half of A&M-Commerce's 11 team blocks in the match.

UT Tyler wrapped up its first season of NCAA Division II and Lone Star Conference membership with a 10-16 overall record, and the Patriots finished 5-13 in conference play with a 2-8 mark within its six-team division. Texas A&M-Commerce moves on to the Lone Star Conference tournament, finishing the regular season 24-5 overall, 16-2 in the Lone Star Conference, and tied for the lead within the division at 9-1.

How It Happened: After spotting A&M-Commerce the first seven points of the match, UT Tyler roared back and with an 8-2 run led by aces from Savannah Guzman and the first of Brianna Bellehumeur's five aces in the match, which pulled the Patriots within one at 9-8. Although the Lions regained a six-point margin at 17-11, Maiya Peña led a 9-2 run with three blocks and a kill, and Bellehumeur served her second ace to push the Patriots in front, 20-19. After A&M-Commerce scored five of the next six points to take a 24-21 lead, Peña notched another kill followed by an ace to trim the lead to 24-23 before the Lions scored their final point of a 25-23 win on a UT Tyler service error.

In the second set, the teams combined to produce seven scoring runs of at least three consecutive points, starting with an early 3-0 run for A&M-Commerce which gave the Lions a 4-2 lead. That was promptly answered by UT Tyler with seven consecutive points, as Peña and Kyana Alvarez teamed up for two blocks while Bellehumeur served another pair of aces during the swing, which gave the Patriots a 9-4 edge. Later in the set, Kayla McCoy had a hand in a block and recorded a kill to cap a three-point swing which gave UT Tyler a 16-15 advantage, but A&M-Commerce claimed the last of eight lead changes in the second set and broke a 22-22 tie with three straight points to claim the second set.

A&M-Commerce led by as many as four points multiple times in the early stages of the third set, but Bellehumeur's fifth ace of the match pulled UT Tyler within one, 16-15. The Lions scored 9 of the next 14 points, leading by at least three points the rest of the way to close out the win with a 25-20 victory.

By The Numbers: The Texas A&M-Commerce attack percentage was down nearly 100 points from Friday night's sweep, as the Lions registered a .232 attack percentage Saturday after producing a .330 percentage Friday night, which was the best for any UT Tyler opponent all season… The Patriots' attack percentage of .078 was identical to Friday night… A&M-Commerce led in every statistical category except service aces, as UT Tyler posted 10 aces to the Lions' 6… The margin for A&M-Commerce in the other categories was 37-27 in kills, 46-39 in digs, 11-7 in blocks, and 37-25 in assists.
