Patriots Fall To DBU For Season Split

DBU used a late first-half goal to create momentum for two more goals in the second half of a 4-1 win over UT Tyler

TYLER, Texas -- UT Tyler was unable to sweep the season series with DBU, falling 4-1 Saturday night to a DBU team it beat in overtime on the road in non-conference play in September.

DBU scored just over a minute into the contest and answered Michael Agyeman's first-half equalizer with another goal in the final minute of the first half, and they added two insurance goals midway through the second half for the 4-1 victory.

With the defeat, UT Tyler drops to 6-6-4 overall and 1-4-3 in the Lone Star Conference, while DBU claims its first conference win to improve to 3-12-1 overall and 1-7-1 in LSC play.

How It Happened: DBU turned an innocuous free kick into the game's first scoring chance, as Brandon Torres took a short pass off the free kick up the right side for a cross in front of the goal. Abraham Garcia knocked it in between a pair of UT Tyler defenders to give DBU an early 1-0 lead.

It didn't take long for the Patriots to answer, as a sustained attack produced a cross into the box that a DBU defender knocked right to the feet of Ramiro Alvarez. Alvarez played it to Michael Agyeman at the top of the box on the right side, and Agyeman took a touch towards the middle and lined up a left-footed strike from 22 yards out that sailed past the DBU goalkeeper into the net to tie the game at 1-1 in the 13th minute.

In the final minute of the first half, a DBU throw-in deep in UT Tyler territory led to a goal from Jonathan Leach, who put away a loose ball from eight yards out to give DBU a 2-1 lead heading into halftime. DBU added another goal in the 63rd minute on a corner kick, as the short corner led to a cross from Christian Naizer to the head of Brandon Torres, who finished it at the back post to extend the lead to 3-1.

Six minutes later, a DBU throw-in up the right sideline led to back-to-back shots from Brandon Torres, which were both blocked by defender D'Anthony Miller. However, the second deflection landed at the feet of David Trevizo for a right-footed volley from 24 yards out. Trevizo's shot towards the right post was partially deflected by another Patriot defender, redirecting it to the left side for a goal that resulted in a 4-1 DBU lead in the 69th minute.

Honoring Seniors: UT Tyler honored a nine-player senior class, its first senior class to play in Division II and the Lone Star Conference. The 2019 senior class included: Aron Alonso, Giancarlo Ayanegui, Steven Chavez, Lucas Coehlo, Travis Collins, Caio Godinho, Austin McIntosh, Parker O'Quinn, and Uriah Shipman.

By The Numbers: DBU generated an 18-11 advantage in shots, including an 11-4 margin after halftime after the teams both took 7 shots in the opening period… UT Tyler took seven corner kicks to four for DBU… Michael Agyeman finished with three shots, including another shot from the right side which established a throw-in in DBU territory which led to his goal shortly thereafter… Agyeman moved into a four-player tie for the team scoring lead, joining Steven Chavez, Travis Collins, and Birkir Eydal with three goals each on the year… Agyeman and Collins lead the Patriots in shots with 24 each.

What's Next: UT Tyler wraps up the 2019 season next week with a Thursday, Nov. 7 visit to St. Mary's before returning home for the final game of the season against Texas A&M International on Nov. 9.
