STEPHENVILLE, Texas -- Led by double-digit scoring performances off the bench from Ty Glover and Jared Jenkins, UT Tyler posted its first Lone Star Conference men's basketball victory Thursday night at Tarleton. The Patriots built a second-half lead as large as 20 points before finishing off the 58-47 road win over a Tarleton team picked to finish fourth in the conference.
Glover scored a game-high 13 points, and Jenkins added a career-high 12 points to lead the Patriots to the win.
With the victory, UT Tyler improved to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the Lone Star Conference, while Tarleton is now winless through four games of conference play, falling to 4-6 overall and 0-4 in the LSC.
Turning Point: Tarleton cut a 16-point second-half deficit down to six points after scoring 10 straight to cut UT Tyler's lead to 35-29 with 13:05 remaining in the game. However, the Patriots responded with a 14-0 scoring flurry in a span of less than two minutes to push the lead to 20 points, 49-29, with 10:38 to play. Jared Jenkins started the scoring outburst with a three-pointer, and Ty Glover followed with back-to-back threes as the pair combined to score all 14 points of the run.
How It Happened: Jared Jenkins hit his first three-pointer of the game less than five minutes in, tying the game at 5-5 to erase Tarleton's only lead of the contest. His trey sparked UT Tyler to a 10-0 run in less than two minutes, and Darius Alford's three-point play with 13:39 remaining in the half finished it off, giving the Patriots an early 12-5 edge. Jenkins knocked down a pair of free throws with 4:58 left, and a Chris Giles layup delivered UT Tyler's first double-digit lead at 23-12 with 4:10 remaining in the half. The Patriots finished the half on an 11-6 scoring run, resulting in a 30-18 halftime edge.
Chris Giles extended the lead to 35-19 with a three-pointer with 16:42 left in the game before Tarleton reeled off 10 straight to pull within six, 35-29, with 13:05 remaining. Jenkins sparked UT Tyler's response with a three-pointer that set off a 14-0 scoring explosion over the next two minutes, as Glover nailed back-to-back threes plus a layup and free throw for another three-point play with 11:12 to play. Jenkins finished off the run with a layup that gave him 12 points, breaking his previous scoring-high at UT Tyler (11 points) and giving the Patriots a commanding 49-29 margin with 10:38 left.
UT Tyler only scored nine more points the rest of the way, but the early lead was more than enough as the Patriots still controlled the game with a 15-point lead heading into the final two minutes.
UT Tyler Standouts: Ty Glover scored 9 of his game-high 13 points after halftime, scoring all 9 points during a 14-0 run midway through the half. Jared Jenkins added 5 points during that same run, finishing with a career-high 12 points off the bench. Both players made 2-of-3 from three-point range. Micah Fuller added 9 points along with a game-high 3 steals, and Chris Giles added 6 points. Giles also grabbed 5 rebounds, tying three others for the team-high in rebounds as Glover, Bradley Mason, and Quinn Smith also pulled in 5 boards each.
Tarleton Standouts: Isaiah Range scored a team-high 13 points, tying UT Tyler's Glover for the game-high in scoring. Josh Hawley and Randall Broddie added 10 points each, and Hawley added a game-high 7 rebounds plus 2 blocks and 3 steals.
By The Numbers: Tarleton shot just 10 percent from three-point range, making 2-of-20 from beyond the arc, including identical 1-for-10 marks in each half… The Texans shot 33 percent (17-for-51) overall and 52 percent (11-for-21) from the free throw line… UT Tyler shot 38 percent (18-for-47) from the field, including 33 percent (6-for-18) on three-pointers, and 80 percent (16-for-20) on free throws… Tarleton edged the Patriots in rebounding, 37-36, leading to an 11-7 edge over UT Tyler in second chance points… The teams were practically even in turnovers, with UT Tyler committing 14 to Tarleton's 13, but the Patriots took advantage and compiled a 20-14 edge in points off turnovers.
What's Next: UT Tyler wraps up its first Lone Star Conference road trip Saturday afternoon in Dallas, taking on Dallas Baptist (9-1 overall/3-1 LSC) at 2 p.m. The Patriots will return home after the New Year, hosting divisional foes Midwestern State (Jan. 2) and Cameron (Jan. 4).
