TYLER, Texas -- Ty Glover exploded for 29 points and 7 rebounds in his first appearance off the bench for UT Tyler this season, leading the Patriots to an 83-75 win over Jarvis Christian Tuesday night to wrap up the non-conference portion of the Patriots' 2019-20 men's basketball slate.
As a team, UT Tyler shot over 50 percent from the field, and the Patriots knocked down 32-of-40 free throws, the third-highest single game total free throws made in program history. Glover led the way, hitting 9-of-10, and Bradley Mason added a 7-for-8 performance at the line. All five starters scored at least 6 points, with Glover coming off the bench for 29 while Jerekius Davis added 7 points, also off the bench. Quinn Smith finished with 12 points to finish as the leading scorer among the starting five.
With the victory, UT Tyler improved to 3-4 overall heading into the final 20-game stretch of Lone Star conference play, which begins with a Dec. 14 matchup at home against Texas A&M-Commerce.
Turning Point: Jarvis Christian had an opportunity to pull within four points of UT Tyler midway through the second half, but Alex Williams missed the back half of a one-and-one at the free throw line with 9:03 remaining. The Patriots responded by scoring seven straight points in less than a minute, starting with a quick Da'Zhon Wyche layup followed by a Ty Glover block, layup, and free throw. Jerekius Davis finished the quick scoring burst with a two-point jumper to extend the lead to 61-49 with 7:58 left in the game, and Jarvis Christian never got closer than 9 points until the final minute of the contest.
How It Happened: UT Tyler erased an early 5-2 deficit with baskets on three consecutive possessions to take the lead for good, and later in the half the Patriots produced a 17-4 run to extend a one-point edge into its largest lead of the game at 25-11. Five different players scored during the run, as Jerekius Davis finished off the scoring run with a pair of free throws with 9:33 remaining in the first half.
Jarvis Christian responded with a 13-2 run, slashing the lead to 27-24 with 5:34 left in the half after McShane Wyatt converted all three free throws after he was fouled on a three-point attempt. Glover answered with a three-point play, and Da'Zhon Wyche scored on a layup on the Patriots' final first-half possession to give UT Tyler a 39-32 halftime lead.
Glover extended the lead to double digits twice in the first five minutes of the second half, but the Bulldogs scored six straight in the next three minutes to pull within 46-42 with 12:48 remaining in the game. Jarvis Christian was back within four (52-48) with 9:30 to play, and Williams went 1-of-2 at the line with 9:03 left to cut the lead to 54-49. UT Tyler responded with a 7-0 run and led by at least 9 points until the final minute of the game when a Tywaun Hampton three-pointer with 5.7 seconds left made it a 6-point spread at 81-75. Bradley Mason knocked down a pair of free throws in the closing seconds for the final eight-point winning margin.
UT Tyler Standouts: Ty Glover led all scorers with 29 points, his second-highest scoring performance of the season, and Quinn Smith added a season-high 12-point effort. Bradley Mason finished with 9 points and 4 assists, while Da'Zhon Wyche produced 7 points along with team-highs in rebounds (9), assists (6), and steals (3). Glover had 7 rebounds and Smith grabbed 6 to lead the Patriots to a 32-29 edge on the boards.
Jarvis Christian Standouts: Five players scored in double figures for the Bulldogs, who were led by a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double off the bench from Jarreyon Johnson. McShane Wyatt contributed 15 points, while Alex Williams and Charles James added 11 points each. Phillip Thompson scored 10 points and dished out a team-high 4 assists.
By The Numbers: UT Tyler's .556 (25-for-45) field goal shooting percentage was its second-highest of the season, and the Patriots also registered their second-highest free throw percentage (.800) in a game this year… Led by Ty Glover (9-for-10) and Braadley Mason (7-for-8), plus seven others who made free throws, UT Tyler combined to go 32-for-40 from the charity stripe, which represented the third-highest number of free throws made in a game in program history… The Patriots generated a 42-24 margin in scoring in the paint, although Jarvis Christian produced an 18-13 margin in points off turnovers and an 11-5 edge in second chance points… UT Tyler evened the all-time series with Jarvis Christian at 4-4, and the Patriots have won each of the past three meetings between the programs.
What's Next: The final 20 games of the 2019-20 season are in Lone Star Conference play, and UT Tyler resumes conference play by hosting its closest geographical rival Texas A&M-Commerce, on Saturday, Dec. 14.
