TYLER, Tex.--University of Texas at Tyler Women's Basketball (13-10) defeated Belhaven University (7-17), 68-57, Thursday evening in the Patriot Center. It is the second Patriots victory over the Braves this season.
The Patriots jumped out to a big lead to open the contest scoring the first 13 points of the game and holding the Braves without a point for the first 4:51. UT Tyler finished the first period shooting 7-16 from the field, including 4-9 from deep, to take a 19-5 lead into the second period.
Junior guard Carissa Spiker (Sanger, Texas) got the scoring started for the UT Tyler in the second period to put the Patriots up 21-10. After a two-and-a-half minute UT Tyler scoreless drought, freshman guard Tyreesha Blaylock (Tyler, Texas) knocked down a three pointer to make it 24-12. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the period with the Patriots owning a 13-point lead at the half, 32-19.
Each team shot an identical 5-15 in the third period with the Patriots outscoring Belhaven by one, 16-15. Senior forward Bianca Valderrama (Corpus Christi, Texas) tallied seven points in the period, while senior forward Samantha Odom (Allen, Texas) added four.
Free throws were the story of the fourth period with both teams shooting a combined 26 free throws. In the end, the Blazers did manage to outscore the Patriots, but UT Tyler was able to fend off the comeback to seal a 68-57 victory on their home court. The victory also moved the Patriots to 7-3 on their home court this season.
Two Patriots finished the game with double-doubles including Valderrama and Spiker. Valderrama picked up her first double-double of the season leading the team with 18 points and 11 rebounds. It was the fourth double-double of the season for Spiker who finished the game with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Also scoring in double figures was Blaylock who finished with 11 points.
The Patriots' season will come to an end on Saturday when they Louisiana College for the final contest of the regular season. UT Tyler will also honor four seniors after the conclusion of their game with the Wildcats.
