PRAIRIE VIEW, Tex.—University of Texas at Tyler Men's and Women's Tennis were both in action Sunday afternoon. The men's team dropped a close match with Prairie View A&M University, 4-3, while the women's team was defeated, 7-0, by Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
In the men's competition with PVAMU, the Patriots picked up the combined point in doubles competition with wins and number-two and three.
Michael Apple (Memphis, Tennessee) and
Alvar De La Mano (Barcelona, Spain) earned the win at number-two with a 6-3 set score. At number-three doubles,
Ford Cunningham (League City, Texas) and
Tomas Parra (Maracaibo, Venezuela) picked up a win with the same score.
Moving to singles play,
Daniel Rodriguez (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) earned a win at number-two. He earned a 6-3 win in the first set before pulling out a narrow 7-6 win in the second set. The other singles victory came at number-four with Parra defeating his opponent 7-6, 6-4.
After being swept in doubles play, the Patriots made a strong push in singles competition.
Chloe Chawner (Holmfirth Yorkshire, England) dropped both sets by a score of 6-4 at number-one singles. At number-four singles,
Brooke Brewer (McKinney, Texas) dropped the first set, 6-2, before battling to a close second set, 6-4. The lone set victory for the Patriots came from
Caitlyn Cox (Tyler, Texas) at number-six. She won the first set, 6-3, before dropping the second set and tiebreak.
Both teams will be back in action on Thursday when they host Dallas Baptist University. They will then travel to Magnolia, Arkansas to take on Southern Arkansas University and Midwestern State University on Friday and Saturday.
