ORLANDO, Fla.—The University of Texas at Tyler Women's Tennis (2-5) split a pair of matches on Monday to begin a five-match trip to central Florida. The Patriots began the day with an early morning sweep of NCAA Division II Shippensburg University (0-6) before falling, 6-1, to NCAA Division I Providence College (2-8).
The Patriots swept all three doubles contests in their first match against Shippensburg. Freshman
Chloe Chawner (Holmfirth Yorkshire, England) and freshman
Brooke Brewer (McKinney) earned a 6-0 sweep at number-two double to win their first match together this season. The duo of senior
Savannah Seely (North Richland, Texas) and senior
Victoria Kniffen (Kerrville, Texas) played their first match together this season getting a 6-0 win. At the top of the doubles lineup, freshman
Ana Claire Gerletti (Cypress, Texas) and senior
Lauren Kuhn (Carrolton, Texas) sealed a Patriot sweep of doubles play with a 6-1 victory.
The top four in the UT Tyler singles lineup all picked up their second victory of the day after wins in doubles action. Chawner got the win at number-one with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep while Kuhn and Brewer also earned straight-set shutouts at number-three and four. Gerletti also picked up her second win of the match at number-two by a score of 6-1, 6-0.
In the bottom part of the Patriot singles lineup, freshman
Ana Zaidan (Betim, Minas Gerais, Brazil) earned he second singles win of the season with back-to-back 6-0 set wins. At number-six singles, Sophomore
Caitlyn Cox (Tyler, Texas) found her first singles win of the season with the same score.
The lone victory for the Patriots in the second match of the day came at number three-doubles. The duo of Kniffen and Seely won their second match of the day together with a 6-3 victory. Gerletti and Kuhn fell just shy at number-one singles when they were defeated by a score of 7-5.
Gerletti did rebound to win her singles match, playing at number-two in the UT Tyler lineup. She won the first set, 6-4, before her Friar opponent forced a third set. Neither player would go down easily in the tiebreak, but Gerletti managed an 11-9 victory to seal the match.
Also playing three-sets in her singles match was Kuhn. She was swept in the first set but battled back to tale a 7-5 victory in the second. She eventually dropped the third set, 10-7, at number three-singles.
The Patriots will be back in action Tuesday with a pair of matches against NCAA Division II opponents including the University of North Georgia and the University of Sioux Falls. The match will happen back-to-back with start times of 3 p.m. (CST) and 5:30 p.m. (CST).
