ORLANDO, Fla.—The University of Texas at Tyler Women's Tennis (3-6) split two matches Tuesday afternoon against NCAA Division II opponents No. 13 University of North Georgia (8-1) and the University of Sioux Falls (4-6). The Patriots were swept, 5-0, by UNG before defeating USF, 6-1.
The Patriots dropped the first two matches of doubles play to give the Nighthawks an early point. The match that went unfinished featured senior
Victoria Kniffen (Kerrville, Texas) and senior
Savannah Seely (North Richland Hills, Texas) who came into the match having won their last two doubles matches together. The duo was trailing 4-3 before doubles play was ended.
UT Tyler found themselves in multiple close matches during singles competition highlighted by freshman
Anna Claire Gerletti (Cypres, Texas) forcing a third set. She dropped the first set, 6-2, before rebounding with a 7-5 win in the second set. She would eventually drop the pro set and the match at number-two singles. Freshman
Brooke Brewer (McKinney, Texas) forced a third set after winning the second, 6-4. Her match went unfinished after the Nighthawks sealed the match.
In their second match of the day, the Patriots swept all three doubles matches highlighted by freshman
Chloe Chawner (Holmfirth Yorkshire, Texas) and Brewer getting their second win of the season together. The duo fought to a 7-5 win at number-two doubles. The other two Patriot doubles teams were playing in their first matches together with Kniffen and senior
Lauren Kuhn (Carrolton, Texas) getting a 7-5 win at number-one while freshman
Alina Pereira (Monte Claros, Brazil) and sophomore
Caitlyn Cox (Tyler, Texas) won at number-three, 6-2.
Nearly completing a sweep in singles play, UT Tyler won at number-two through number-five. Three Patriots won their second match of the day in their singles competition including Kuhn at number-two. She made quick work of her opponent with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Brewer and Kniffen also won their matches with ease for their second wins of the match. Brewer won at number three with set scores of 6-2, 6-0. Kniffen rounded out the singles lineup at number-six with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Getting the final two singles victories were freshman
Ana Zaidan (Betim, Minas Gerais, Brazil) and Seely at numbers-four and five. Zaidan moved to 3-3 on the season in singles action after a three-set victory while Seely one her first singles match of the season.
The trio to Florida will conclude on Wednesday when the Patriots take on the United States Naval Academy at 11 a.m. (CST).
