ORLANDO, Fla.—The University of Texas at Tyler Women's Tennis (4-7) split a pair of matches to end their six-match trip to central Florida on Wednesday. The Patriots began the day with a 6-1 loss to NCAA Division I the United States Naval Academy (16-6) before ending the day with a sweep over Susquehanna University (4-2).
Beginning the day against Navy, the Patriots dropped the first two doubles matches to surrender a point. At number-one singles, freshman
Anna Claire Gerletti (Cypress, Texas) and senior
Lauren Kuhn (Carrolton, Texas) dropped their match, 6-3, while freshman
Brooke Brewer (McKinney, Texas) and senior
Victoria Kniffen (Kerrville, Texas) fell at number-two by the same score.
In singles action, Brewer had a strong showing at number-four. She dropped the first set, 6-1, before losing the match in the second, 6-4. Playing near the top of the lineup, Gerletti fell, 6-1, in the first set before dropping the second set by a score of 6-3 at number-two.
Taking on Susquehanna in an evening matchup, the Patriots took all three doubles matches highlighted by an 8-0 victory at number-one by Gerletti and Kuhn. At number-two, freshman
Chloe Chawner (Holmfirth Yorkshire, England) and Kniffen moved to 4-2 together this season with an 8-1 win while senior
Alexandra McKissick (Houston, Texas) and freshman
Alina Pereira (Monte Carlos, Brazil) eraning a victory with the same score.
Chawner and Brewer swept their opponents in the top half of the singles lineup. Both picked up 6-0, 6-0 victories along with Kniffen who was playing at number-five singles. For Brewer, it was her fifth singles win of the season, the most in the UT Tyler lineup.
The Patriots will now get more than a week off before returning to action at the Summers Tennis Center for the final time this season. UT Tyler will host NCAA Division II and future Lone Star Conference opponent Midwestern State University March 21 at 3 p.m.
